AI/ML Engineer
Ello · San Francisco, CA
About this role
**AI/ML Engineer — Ello** Ello’s mission is to maximize the potential of every child, everywhere. We’re building the world’s first AI teacher—an interactive learning experience that listens, speaks, adapts, and inspires. Our first product, **Read with Ello**, helps hundreds of thousands of kids each week learn to read, and we’re now scaling that success into a complete AI teacher for all children. **About the role** Join Ello’s product engineering and applied research team, working at the intersection of research and production. You’ll help solve open-ended problems while delivering real-world product improvements—shipping AI features, designing evaluations to prove impact, and turning fuzzy questions into measurable experiments. **What you’ll do** - Define the impact of AI on children’s education - Own AI systems and features end-to-end (from identifying product opportunities to building/operating research & evaluation systems, to shipping production improvements) - Collaborate with learning experts and product engineers to build infrastructure measuring educational quality, engagement, safety, latency, and behavior - Design and improve the agent harness powering Ello’s tutoring experience (what to teach next, when to intervene, and how to adapt) - Build learner profiling and adaptation systems (strengths, gaps, pace, engagement patterns) to drive instructional decisions - Create feedback loops and data flywheels that continuously improve product quality through usage, evaluation, and experimentation **About you** - **3+ years** building AI products in an engineering or research role, with strong ownership - Strong **software engineering fundamentals** (clean Python, ability to ramp quickly, debug complex systems, make technical decisions with incomplete information) - Experience building and operating **evaluation/measurement systems** (e.g., AI evals) and owning the loop from metrics → research plans → production improvements - Comfort with **experimental thinking** and improving non-deterministic systems as underlying AI foundations evolve - Solid **machine learning foundations** (can read recent ML papers and implement parts of the stack; sufficient applied math/linear algebra for research discussions) - An **AI-forward workflow** (using AI in your engineering process and staying curious about how AI transforms work) **Bonus points** - Public projects demonstrating technical creativity - Strong product intuition (knowing what’s worth measuring) - Depth in low-latency inference at scale - Experience with model training - Familiarity with speech systems **We’re looking for candidates who** - Have something to teach us - Want to make a real impact on child development at scale - Take initiative and full ownership - Prefer open, direct communication grounded in empathy - Want to build meaningful relationships at work **Team & location** Ello’s 5-person applied ML team works on agent reliability, learner adaptation, evaluation, and multimodal perception. The team works **in-person** from Ello’s **San Francisco** office. **Immigration note** If you already have work authorization in the US, Ello may be able to sponsor depending on your situation. Ello has successfully secured **O-1 visas** for employees. **Apply / learn more** https://new.ello.com/ *Contact for accommodations during the interview process: recruiting@ello.com*
