About this role
## Engineering Manager, Product **Doctronic | New York City or San Francisco (Hybrid) | Full Time** ### About the role Doctronic provides free, private access to AI health guidance and affordable visits with human physicians. Millions of consultations already flow through the product. We’re hiring an **Engineering Manager** to lead a team building Doctronic’s products and the **AI systems behind them**. This is a **hands-on management** role: you’ll work in the codebase, guide architecture, review changes, debug production issues, and ship alongside your team. You’ll be accountable for **team health, technical quality, delivery, and the impact** of what you build. We expect engineering leaders to work **AI-natively**, including directing coding agents across planning, implementation, testing, review, and debugging. ### What you’ll do - Lead and grow a team of product engineers through clear expectations, coaching, direct feedback, and high standards. - Partner with product, design, clinical, AI, and operations teams to understand problems, set priorities, and define what success looks like. - Turn incomplete requirements into focused projects, make technical tradeoffs, and keep the team shipping through short planning cycles. - Contribute production code, lead technical investigations, review changes, and help resolve difficult implementation and production problems. - Guide work across user experiences, backend services, data models/integrations, and AI workflows—help engineers own complete solutions end-to-end. - Turn AI capabilities into useful product behavior with reliable orchestration, safeguards, and evaluations grounded in real use. - Make coding agents and automation effective across the team (better scoping, context, verification, and reusable tooling). - Own the operation of the services your team ships, partnering with Platform on shared infrastructure, tooling, and standards. - Review product usage, user feedback, AI evaluations, and production performance after launch, and use learnings to improve decisions. - Hire strong engineers and expand team scope as Doctronic grows. ### What we’re looking for - Experience managing and developing engineers building and operating user-facing products (or the systems behind them). - Strong software engineering background with the ability to contribute production code and solve difficult technical problems. - Experience shipping across frontend and backend systems (depth in at least one area; ability to lead across the rest). - Strong product judgment: clarify problems, challenge assumptions, choose appropriate scope, and connect engineering decisions to user outcomes. - Daily experience directing coding agents, with evidence you’ve improved how teams build software with them. - Practical judgment about AI systems: when to use models/agents, how to evaluate behavior, and when explicit controls and human judgment are needed. - Track record improving engineering throughput while maintaining quality, reliability, and maintainability. - Experience hiring, coaching, giving direct feedback, and helping engineers grow. - Sound decisions around patient safety, privacy, security, accessibility, and production reliability. - Clear communication with engineering and company leadership, including surfacing risks early. **Note:** Many candidates will have **8+ years** of engineering experience, including **2+ years managing engineers**.
