Senior Engineering Manager, Observability Engineering
Temporal · Seattle, Washington
About this role
## Senior Engineering Manager, Observability Engineering Temporal is an open source programming model that helps simplify code, improve reliability, and let developers focus on delivering features faster. We’re building the reliable foundation of every developer’s toolbox—and we’re looking for leaders who share our values: **curious, driven, collaborative, genuine, and humble**. ### Why this role Observability is how we (and our customers) know the execution layer is holding. This role owns **both**: - **Internal observability platform** used by our engineers to run a multi-tenant service relied on by major companies. - **Customer-facing observability** where customers debug their own workflows through what we expose—making the quality of that experience a key platform feature. ### Responsibilities - **Observability roadmap:** Own the team’s technical roadmap and delivery, aligned with broader engineering priorities. Evaluate build/buy/open-source options balancing reliability, customer needs, and cost. - **Technical leadership:** Lead, hire, and grow a high-ownership team. Guide decisions via design/code reviews. Coach engineers and remove friction that slows progress. - **Platform ownership:** Own ingestion, storage, query, and visualization for **high-cardinality telemetry** across a multi-tenant, multi-cloud fleet. Enable self-serve capabilities for a growing engineering organization. - **Operational excellence:** Own alerting and incident response tooling end-to-end. Improve detection quality, routing, and actionable runbooks to make on-call sustainable, and turn incident reviews into lasting reliability improvements. - **Customer-facing observability:** Partner with Product and SDK teams on telemetry exposed to customers (metrics, traces, workflow-level diagnostics). Work with design-partner customers and feed learnings into the roadmap. - **Cost, capacity & economics:** Own unit economics (cost per ingested series, per query, per namespace). Set cardinality budgets, drive consolidation to reduce tool sprawl, and manage vendor relationships based on clear value. - **Cross-functional partnership:** Work with Engineering, Product, Security, and Support to resolve competing priorities and deliver shared outcomes. Clearly communicate tradeoffs and risks to senior leaders and non-specialists. ### Qualifications - Proven experience leading engineering teams building and operating **observability/monitoring/telemetry platforms** at scale with strong operational practices. - Demonstrated success leading production observability teams (hiring, coaching, performance management, delivery). - **15+ years** in software and/or infrastructure engineering, including **7+ years** people management, with ownership of delivery and live-site outcomes. - Experience with hiring, leveling, and performance management. - Strong distributed-systems expertise with hands-on judgment to guide architecture and execution. - Experience operating multi-tenant infrastructure dependent on by other people’s production workloads. - Bachelor’s degree in CS or related field (or equivalent practical experience); advanced degree a plus. - Excellent communication skills across engineering, product, and leadership; ability to translate customer feedback into a roadmap. ### Required skills - Strong leadership and coaching; ability to grow engineers and build a healthy, accountable, high-ownership team (including through reorgs, acquisitions, or platform migrations). -
