**Waymo — 2027 Summer Intern (PhD) | Research | RSI for Autonomous Driving** Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the world’s most trusted driver. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo’s fully autonomous ride-hail service and has driven over 100 million miles on public roads and tens of billions of miles in simulation. **Team / Focus** The Waymo AI Foundations team develops machine learning solutions for open problems in autonomous driving, with an emphasis on safely operating Waymo vehicles across many cities and driving conditions. Current areas include reinforcement learning, learning from demonstration, generative modeling, Bayesian inference, hierarchical learning, and robust evaluation. **What you will do** - Conduct literature research on SOTA in RSI, physics AI foundational models, autonomous driving foundational models, and world action models; connect findings to your research to improve driver quality - Design new data and post-training recipes to RL the driver using the critic model and world model in a close-loop setup - Code and implement the RSI system - Inspect training results and ablation studies to iterate on algorithm design **What you have** - Currently pursuing a PhD in Computer Science, Robotics, Machine Learning, or a related quantitative field - Depth in foundational AI model post-training, especially reinforcement learning (RL) - Fluency using AI coding agents; familiarity with an RL training framework such as Rex, Verl, or NeMo-RL - Fluency in AI model training fundamentals (e.g., transformer architecture, hyperparameter tuning, overfitting/debugging) - Familiarity with autonomous driving, physics AI, VLA, or world models **We prefer** - Depth in RL for robotics or autonomous driving models - Depth in world action models or video generation models - Experience with Recursive Self-Improvement training for AI models **Location / Application Notes** - Hybrid onsite internship - Resumes accepted on a rolling basis until the role is filled - If applying to multiple roles, apply to each one individually (apply to the top 3 roles you’re interested in) **Pay (Hourly PhD Pay)** - **$85–$85 USD/hour**
