About this role
**Staff Software Engineer, Finance Engineering — Anthropic** ## About Anthropic Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems—safe and beneficial for users and society. ## About the role Every dollar Anthropic earns and spends on compute must be recorded correctly, at scale, with audit-grade controls. You’ll build the platform that enables a continuous close with zero material issues. You’ll own systems such as: - A single “front door” for every finance event - An append-only ledger - An accounting engine that posts each event exactly once This is a distributed systems problem with an unusually high correctness bar: the system must be right to the cent, replay cleanly, and explain any number as of any date. ## Responsibilities - Design and build the front door into finance and governed contracts (APIs for apps and agents, event bus, adapters, data-quality gates, exactly-once processing with replay/backfill) - Drive the accounting ledger and engine (append-only ledger, idempotent posting, rules framework → journal entries, ERP translation, period locks) - Design and build SDKs/frameworks for finance apps and agents - Build controls into the platform as code (immutable audit trail, maker-checker, scoped access, segregation of duties) - Build and run production services used in real time (e.g., tax and collections in billing flows) and own reliability (uptime, latency, throughput, correctness) - Shape technical direction (architecture, engineering standards, design reviews) ## Minimum qualifications - Strong backend engineering in a statically typed language (Go, Java, Rust) or Python at scale - Experience designing/running high-volume event-driven systems with idempotent processing, replay, and backfill - Experience with relational data models and SQL for complex, versioned data - Experience designing APIs/SDKs and service-to-service integrations - Experience building systems with auditability, access control, or compliance requirements - Ability to turn requirements from non-engineering partners into technical designs - Strong written and verbal communication (including design docs) ## Preferred qualifications - 10+ years of experience - Experience building developer platforms / paved paths - Streaming systems experience (e.g., Pub/Sub, Kafka) - Experience building with LLMs and agents (including MCP) - Built a ledger/sub-ledger/billing/payments system - Familiarity with accounting concepts (double-entry, journal entries) - Familiarity with internal controls and audit concepts (audit trails, segregation of duties, change management) - Exposure to ERP/financial systems (e.g., Workday Financials) ## Compensation (Annual) $320,000 — $405,000 USD ## Logistics - **Minimum education:** Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent combination of education/training/experience) - **Required field of study:** Relevant to the role - **Minimum years of experience:** Correlates with internal job level - **Location-based hybrid policy:** In one of our offices at least 25% of the time (some roles may require more) - **Visa sponsorship:** Sponsored for some roles/candidates; reasonable efforts made if offered ## Apply We encourage you to apply even if you don’t meet every qualification.
