Senior Software Engineer, Platform Overlay & Networking
Anduril Industries · Irvine, California, United States
About this role
**Senior Software Engineer, Platform Overlay & Networking** **About Anduril** Anduril Industries is a defense technology company with a mission to transform U.S. and allied military capabilities with advanced technology. Anduril’s family of systems is powered by **Lattice OS**, an AI-powered operating system that turns thousands of data streams into a real-time, 3D command and control center. **About the Team** The **Sentry Tower Software** team develops robotic systems that provide force protection capabilities—monitoring the perimeter of secure areas (land or sea) for approaching people, vehicles, and vessels. The team leverages advanced **sensor fusion** and **autonomy** to render activity in the environment to Lattice’s common operating picture. **About the Job** Every Sentry Tower ships from a common software platform: a **NixOS-based overlay** that defines base images, system services, compute configuration for each hardware generation, and the **network topology** that ties the tower’s payloads together. This role owns that platform. This is a systems and infrastructure role with direct product consequences. The tower network is not a datacenter network—it’s a set of **VLANs and bridges** carrying camera, radar, GPS, and sensor-board traffic over a mix of **mesh radio, cellular, and satellite backhaul**, on hardware at the far end of a long support loop. Failures show up in the field when payloads are added or routing priorities are wrong. You’ll also steward a **build and configuration system**: fully declarative, reproducible images across multiple compute generations and product variants, while consolidating legacy per-product configurations into a common, composable base. **WHAT YOU’LL DO** - Own the shared base of the NixOS overlay: system modules, compute platform definitions, common tower services, and image definitions used by every product variant. - Own the tower network topology end to end: VLAN/subnet allocation, bridging, link ranking and failover across heterogeneous backhaul, NAT/firewall policy, and physical-port-to-payload mapping for each carrier board. - Define and enforce the integration contract business line teams use to add network-attached payloads—so additions extend the platform instead of diverging. - Drive consolidation of legacy, per-product configurations into the common overlay, with build-time checks to prevent drift. - Support and extend the real-time messaging layer as services migrate from the legacy pub-sub bus to its next-generation replacement (topic and schema contracts, data ownership). - Debug issues spanning multiple layers at once: kernel/device tree, systemd unit ordering, Nix evaluation, link-layer configuration, and sensor daemons. **REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS** - 4+ years of professional software engineering with substantial time in **Linux systems**, embedded platforms, or infrastructure work. - Deep, practical networking knowledge: **VLANs, bridging, routing and policy routing, DHCP, multicast, NAT, and firewalling**, plus fluency with **ip**, **tcpdump**, and **Wireshark**. - Strong experience with **declarative configuration management** and **reproducible builds** (Nix/NixOS preferred; Bazel, Buildroot, Yocto, or infrastructure-as-code tooling like Terraform/Ansible/Pulumi are solid substitutes). - Proficiency in **Rust or C++**—enough to read and modify services on top of the platform (not just configuration). - Comfort operating and troubleshooting real hardware: serial co
