About this role
**Staff Software Engineer — Watchdog Anomaly Detection (Datadog)** Datadog is looking for a **Staff Software Engineer** to help shape the future of our **anomaly detection platform**. You’ll work on high-scale distributed systems that process **streaming and batch data**, partnering with machine learning systems to automatically identify potential issues in customer environments. As we expand these capabilities across Datadog’s products, you’ll help define the technical direction, evolve our architecture, and build systems that surface meaningful insights **without requiring manual configuration**. --- ### What you’ll do - Lead the architecture and evolution of large-scale distributed systems powering automated anomaly detection across Datadog’s platform. - Design and improve high-throughput **streaming and batch processing** pipelines for timely, reliable detection. - Drive technical initiatives to simplify, consolidate, and modernize existing systems to improve scalability, maintainability, and operational efficiency. - Partner with engineering leaders, product managers, and data scientists to define long-term technical strategy and integration with alerting. - Shape how anomaly detection capabilities are delivered across Datadog products so customers can identify meaningful issues without manual setup. - Provide technical leadership across engineering teams and influence architectural decisions aligned with broader product/platform goals. --- ### Who you are - Extensive experience designing, building, and operating **large-scale distributed systems**, especially high-throughput or data-intensive backend platforms. - Strong understanding of **streaming and batch processing** architectures and low-latency data processing challenges. - Experience leading complex architectural initiatives, making tradeoffs, and improving reliability and maintainability in production. - Ability to drive technical strategy beyond your immediate team and translate customer needs into scalable platform solutions. - Comfortable working across technologies; experience with **Flink, Kafka, Cassandra, Go, or Python** is a plus. - Product-oriented mindset connecting technical decisions to customer outcomes; familiarity with ML systems or deploying models is a plus (not required). --- ### Benefits & growth - Grow as a technical leader while influencing shared capabilities used across Datadog products. - Exposure to complex challenges across large-scale distributed systems, real-time data processing, and machine learning. - Collaboration with experienced engineers, product managers, and data scientists across multiple teams. - Opportunities to develop expertise in platform architecture, technical strategy, and cross-functional engineering leadership. - A collaborative engineering environment that encourages knowledge sharing, continuous learning, and professional development. *Benefits and growth may vary by country and employment type.* --- ### Work style - **Hybrid** --- ### Compensation (estimated) - **$244,000 — $305,000 USD** (yearly) Datadog offers a competitive salary and equity package, and may include variable compensation.
