Senior Software Engineer - Data Infrastructure
Backblaze · Remote - US
About this role
**About Backblaze** Backblaze is the object storage leader in the open cloud movement, fueling customer success with cloud storage built to unlock budgets, unburden administrators, and unleash innovators. Founded in 2007, Backblaze has grown to generate over $100M in revenue and manages 3+ billion gigabytes of data storage for 500K+ customers across 175+ countries. --- **What you’ll be doing** You’ll work on Backblaze’s data infrastructure platform that supports **B2 Object Storage** and **Computer Backup**—the underlying data infrastructure everything runs on. You’ll help improve **automation, observability, and stability** for durability, increase throughput, and drive architectural changes to meet long-term service requirements. --- **Responsibilities** - Design and build automation frameworks so other engineers can provision, configure, and repair fleet infrastructure - Design and extend the observability stack (metrics, logs, traces, alerts) to understand platform health and degradation - Build reporting, dashboards, and visualizations for fleet health, capacity, and operational trends - Build system health tooling to detect failing hardware, drifting configuration, and capacity risk before incidents - Lead technical design discussions and produce clear design documents for cross-team, multi-service changes - Drive large feature implementation from design through rollout, including migration and backfill - Partner with the on-call rotation to turn recurring toil and incident learnings into automation and better signal --- **The Right Fit** - 7+ years of backend development in an enterprise environment using an object-oriented or systems language (Java, Rust, C++, C#, Go, or similar) - Experience designing automation frameworks/platforms other engineers build on - Experience building large-scale systems running on thousands of servers - Experience building automation/tooling other engineers rely on daily (platform services, operational tooling, deployment/config pipelines) - Working knowledge of observability stacks (Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, ELK, Datadog, or equivalent), including instrumenting services and designing trusted alerts - Strong Linux fundamentals; comfort operating in bare-metal or hybrid environments - Experience using AI-assisted development tools (Gemini, Cursor, Claude Code, or similar) - Comfort with the full SDLC: design, implementation, testing, and rollout - Curiosity and a tendency to understand before proposing solutions - Proactive communication in a remote environment (surface blockers early, keep the team informed, move work forward) - Analytical thinking for ambiguous problems --- **Bonus points for** - Proficiency in Java - Experience with configuration management / infrastructure-as-code (Ansible, Salt, Puppet, Chef, Terraform) - Experience designing SLOs and error budgets, or reducing alert noise at scale - Experience with time-series databases and query languages such as PromQL - Experience automating hardware lifecycle work (burn-in, failure detection, drive replacement, decommissioning) - Experience discovering and implementing performance improvements (CPU/IO) - Understanding of Linux internals and file systems - Familiarity with hard drive performance and optimization (including host-managed SMR) - Experience building and interpreting models, dashboards, or reports --- **Required for all Backblaze Employees** - Good attitude and willingness to do whatever it takes to get the
