Engineering Manager, Federal & Regulated Infrastructure
Snorkel AI · San Francisco, CA (Hybrid); United States (Remote)
About this role
**Engineering Manager, Federal & Regulated Infrastructure** **About Snorkel** Snorkel AI is the frontier AI data lab, helping teams build the data and environments behind high-performing frontier and agentic AI. We combine technology with research-driven AI data development to create datasets, benchmarks, evals, and custom solutions for real-world AI systems. Founded out of the Stanford AI Lab in 2019, Snorkel works with leading AI labs and enterprises to move from better data to better outcomes. --- ## About the Role This team brings our **DaaS (Data-as-a-Service)** platform to **government and regulated enterprise** customers. You’ll lead the engineering team that makes the services behind DaaS run **securely in regulated, high-assurance infrastructure**—without forking the product. This is a **zero-to-one** role: you’ll start by understanding regulated customer requirements in depth, then work with your team and the platform team to make architecture changes, move services, and deploy end to end into regulated environments. Your team won’t be building data—you’ll build the infrastructure and deployment foundation that enables customers (with support from Applied AI) to develop and deliver data and evals inside these environments. You’ll make autonomous technical, execution, and people decisions, and you’ll know the systems well enough to challenge designs and propose better ones. --- ## Main Responsibilities - Lead a team of engineers through a **zero-to-one build**: define technical requirements, make architecture changes, and deploy/operate services in regulated environments end to end - Partner with the platform team to decide what adapts for regulated infrastructure vs. what stays identical—so one product moves forward across every environment - Build **repeatable environment provisioning** using infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD to promote releases from commercial to regulated environments, with security scanning and change control built into the workflow - Partner with **Security, Compliance, Product, and Applied AI** to turn requirements (FedRAMP, NIST 800-53, CMMC, and customer-specific) into engineering work, with design decisions documented and audit-ready by default - Own operational outcomes for regulated environments: continuous monitoring, vulnerability management, incident response, and the evidence trail - Work through gaps between commercial and regulated infrastructure and design alternatives where capabilities differ - Drive hiring in hypergrowth: build a strong bench and keep the bar high as the team scales - Coach and develop engineers and tech leads into owners who see problems beyond their own projects - Set clear priorities, plans, and delivery commitments, and rebalance quickly as company needs shift - Establish engineering standards for design reviews, testing, observability, and root cause analysis --- ## What We’re Looking For - **6+ years** software engineering experience with strong hands-on technical depth - **2+ years** in an engineering management role leading engineers - **2+ years** hands-on experience deploying into government or other regulated cloud environments with isolated, air-gapped, or otherwise restricted networks - Experience designing, building, and operating scaled production cloud systems, including infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD, and containerized services - Deep technical fluency: strong architecture/design review skills and the ability to propose meaningful changes - Experien
