## 🛡️ Engineering Manager, Preparedness **OpenAI · San Francisco, CA · Hybrid (3 days/week in office)** --- ### 🏢 About the Team The **Preparedness Engineering** team builds and operates safeguards for frontier model risks — safely enabling advanced capabilities while detecting and limiting harm. --- ### 📋 About the Role Lead a team building software systems that **detect and prevent harmful misuse of frontier AI models** before incidents occur. This is a builder's role focused on shipping production services, detection pipelines, and mitigation mechanisms at **billions-of-users scale**. --- ### 🔧 What You'll Do - Lead engineers building **detection + mitigation systems** for frontier model harms - Set the **technical roadmap** and execution strategy — prioritize, design, ship, iterate, measure - Build production systems: services, pipelines, tooling, instrumentation, and automation - Partner with **Research and Product** to translate model capabilities into deployable signals and mitigations - Drive strong engineering fundamentals: architecture, reliability, monitoring, and operational excellence - **Hire and grow** an exceptional team across backend, data systems, and applied ML engineering - Anticipate scaling challenges as agentic workflows grow more capable --- ### ✅ You Might Thrive Here If You... - Have experience building systems in **adversarial, fast-evolving environments** - Thrive in high-context environments and are comfortable with ambiguity - Communicate clearly and build trust quickly with senior stakeholders - Have significant experience **leading engineering teams** and delivering production systems end-to-end - Possess strong technical judgment in **distributed systems, data pipelines, observability, and reliability** - Have partnered cross-functionally with Research/Product/Security to ship risk-reducing systems at scale - *(Bonus)* Background in autonomy, high-scale real-time systems, or intelligence-adjacent domains --- ### 🌍 About OpenAI OpenAI is an AI research and deployment company dedicated to ensuring that general-purpose AI benefits all of humanity.
