About this role

**Who we are** Atoms is building the machines that power the next era of progress—real-world robots for the industries that move civilization forward (starting with food, mining, and transport). We integrate hardware, software, AI, operations, manufacturing, and deployment to turn complex physical operations into something more reliable, scalable, and productive. **About the role** We’re seeking a **Staff Systems Integration Engineer** to build and own our **hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) system benches** that validate our autonomy stack off-vehicle. You’ll own the bench end-to-end—from architecture and physical build, through commissioning and automation, to daily use by our software and autonomy teams. **What you’ll do** - **System Bench Architecture & Build:** Own bench design and construction (topology, electrical architecture, schematic capture, component selection/sourcing, harness design/fabrication, physical build, commissioning). Establish and document correlation between bench behavior and vehicle behavior. - **Vehicle & Network Simulation:** Simulate absent vehicle systems so autonomy compute runs against a complete simulated vehicle system. Generate network traffic, power/ignition states, drive-by-wire actuation, and body/charging behavior across **CAN, CAN FD, and Automotive Ethernet**. Implement gateway and signal-override paths to command any vehicle state. - **Sensor Data Replay:** Implement time-synchronized, full-rate replay of recorded sensor and vehicle data into the autonomy compute to make on-road events repeatable bench tests. Start with open-loop replay and architect for closed-loop replay. - **Test Automation & Continuous Integration:** Design and maintain automated test frameworks to trigger bench execution from code changes, gate releases, run unattended, and report results clearly for non-hardware engineers. - **Fault Injection & Off-Nominal Validation:** Define and execute validation for fault injection, degraded-mode and fail-operational behavior, redundant compute/power paths, and loss-of-communication scenarios—supporting **L4 requirements** and safety case evidence. - **Tooling Strategy & Sourcing:** Own build-vs-buy decisions for bench hardware/software and be accountable for cost, lead time, and long-term maintenance. Manage suppliers and vendor toolchains. - **Cross-Functional Support & Debugging:** Support autonomy, embedded, hardware, and vehicle integration teams as primary bench users (access, uptime, monitoring). Lead root-cause analysis across sensor timing, drivers, harnessing, and compute; convert findings into upstream design changes and corrective actions. - **Engineering Standards & Documentation:** Establish automotive-grade conventions for schematics, naming/labeling, harness documentation, and configuration control. Lead design reviews and help engineers/technicians troubleshoot the bench. **What we’re looking for** - **BS** in EE/CE/ME/CS or related field with **8+ years** experience, or **MS** with **6+ years** (equivalent hands-on experience considered). - Experience designing/building **HIL or system-level test benches** from architecture through commissioning (topology, schematic capture, component selection, harness design, bring-up). - Hands-on experience with **vehicle networks** (**CAN, CAN FD, LIN, Automotive Ethernet**) including restbus simulation, **DBC/LDF** authoring, and bus analysis tooling. - Experience developing and deploying **real-time plant/actuator/sensor/power mod
