About this role
## Senior Software Engineer, Simulation ### Who we are Atoms is building the machines that power the next era of progress. We create **Physical AI**—real-world robots for industries that move civilization forward (starting with **food, mining, and transport**). Our systems are designed to understand, predict, and control the real world with precision, turning complex physical operations into something more reliable, scalable, and productive. ### About the role We’re seeking a **Senior Software Engineer** to build the **log replay** and **scenario execution** systems at the core of our simulation platform. You’ll take a recorded log from storage to a replayable test case to a scored result—owning **execution, determinism, and reporting** throughout. You’ll work across **on-road and off-highway** programs and build the **tooling** other engineers use to run scenario suites. ### What you’ll do - **Log replay:** Build the pipeline that converts recorded logs into replayable test cases (ingest, indexing, retrieval, and on-demand replay). Implement open-loop scoring vs. ground truth and closed-loop replay where the simulation is allowed to diverge. - **Scenario execution:** Build an execution layer that runs a scenario identically every time (clock control, seed/config management, and results traceable to a software version). - **Continuous integration:** Integrate simulation into CI (commit, nightly, and regression workflows) and keep failures attributable. - **Metrics and reporting:** Implement pass criteria and release metrics, and reporting that turns failing batches into actionable lists. - **Scale and cost:** Run large batches efficiently, track simulation run cost, and reduce cost as volume grows. - **Tooling:** Build interfaces, visualizations, and CLI tools so engineers can use the platform effectively. - **Cross-functional work:** Partner with autonomy/robotics on failure definitions and with bench + hardware-in-the-loop engineering to move from simulation to bench to vehicle. ### What we’re looking for - BS in CS/Robotics/EE or related + **5+ years** software engineering, or MS + **3+ years**. - Proficiency in **C++ and Python**, including ability to read, navigate, and debug large codebases. - Experience building/operating **data or test infrastructure at scale** (pipelines, batch execution, storage, indexing). - Experience with **simulation, log replay, or large-scale automated testing** for robotics/autonomous vehicles. - Working experience with **robotics middleware** and its logging/replay tooling. - Experience handling **autonomous driving/robotics sensor data** across modalities and timestamps (camera, LiDAR, radar). - Practical understanding of **determinism and reproducibility** (clock control, seed management, configuration pinning). - Experience integrating test workloads into **continuous integration**. - Fluency with modern **AI coding/agentic development tools**. - Clear written communication (design notes and test results). - Willingness to travel occasionally to deployment/test sites. - Ability to work **onsite five days a week in San Francisco**. ### Why join us Work on one of the defining challenges of our time: bringing automation into the physical world with real, lasting impact. The work is ambitious and challenging, grounded in purpose and a team committed to seeing it through together. ### Location & compensation - **Location:** San Francisco (onsite, five days/week) - **Base salary range:** **$195,000
