## Head of Technology ### About the collective We’re a worker-owned creative collective innovating across brands and IRL communities, IoT devices, and cross-platform apps. We share profit, open-source everything, spin out new businesses, and invest in exciting ideas through financial and/or in-kind contributions. Our client roster includes **Google, Stripe, Figma, Hinge, Black Socialists in America, ACLU, Pratt, Parsons, Mozilla, The Nobel Prize, MIT, Gnosis, Etsy,** and **Gagosian**. ### The role The **Head of Technology** has one mandate: **everything we build works, holds up in production, and gets built the smartest way available**. You’ll work closely with our founder & president **Hugh Francis** to set the engineering standard and build the culture that sustains it. This role spans all garden3d verticals, but your home base is **Sanctuary Computer** (about **70%** of your time). You can be based **anywhere** (with many team members in New York), and we’re open to hiring across **Europe, Singapore, Chicago,** or wherever you are. ### What you’ll do **Systems that hold up** - Own the technical blueprint on our most important projects - Make hard calls on what to build, buy, or leave out - Engineer complex systems that are shipped and run in production **All in on agentic development** - Lead loop engineering and agent workflows against evals - Ensure guardrails make agentic development trustworthy - Turn agentic development into the default way Sanctuary Computer works **Practical engineering** - Prefer convention over configuration and “boring technology” - Use platforms-as-a-service (e.g., **Render/Heroku**) over bespoke infrastructure - Practice value engineering: simplest thing that works, built well, at a cost clients are glad to pay **Code quality at Sanctuary Computer** - Set expectations for code review and architecture/quality - Keep the bar high without slowing the team down **Hiring and empowering the very best** - Recruit exceptional engineers - Give them room to do their best work while maintaining the standard **Estimation, scoping, and delivery** - Help teams estimate reliably and deliver at the pace we promise - Diagnose why estimates miss and improve the process **The technical voice in new business** - Join new business calls, scope work, and write technical proposal content - Explain hard tradeoffs to client CTOs and CEOs **Hardware sense** - Understand how hardware constrains software and how to plan across both **The garden3d technology story** - Decide which tools/platforms we bet on - Ensure studios use agents effectively - Answer “how should we build this?” across the collective **Culture** - Model partnership, curiosity, and accountability - Lead with transparency and non-dictatorial leadership ### Special projects (examples) - Make agentic development the default way Sanctuary Computer builds (loops + evals) - Set shared technical conventions across all garden3d studios - Build flagship engineering engagements that change perceptions - Hire the next generation of engineers across every garden3d studio - Turn internal tools/agents into products - Partner with the Head of Design to ensure studio websites are as well engineered as they are designed ### Qualifications **Must have** - **12+ years** building software; **3+ years** leading engineers in a studio/agency/startup/founder-led environment - Deep experience engineering complex systems shipped and run in production (distributed services,
