About this role
**Senior Software Engineer — Foundation & Luau Platform** Roblox is building the tools and platform that empower our community to bring any experience they can imagine to life—connecting a billion people with optimism and civility. The **Foundation and Luau Platform** team builds the shared platform that Roblox’s UI runs on. Our UI is written in **Luau** using **React-style frameworks**. We own core pieces that product teams across Roblox rely on, including a shared component library, server-driven UI, the core app frame and navigation, and the frameworks/libraries underneath them. ## What you’ll do - Design and build the frameworks and APIs that Roblox’s UI is built on (layout & navigation systems, server-driven UI, shared component library). - Build and evolve core systems beneath the UI—navigation, routing, state management, and data flow—to ensure features load quickly and behave consistently. - Drive startup performance, transition smoothness, and layout stability across phones, tablets, and desktop using traces and telemetry to set measurable quality bars. - Roll out platform changes safely at scale using feature flags, staged rollouts, side-by-side validation, and fast rollback when needed. - Drive adoption across Roblox by partnering with product, design, and feature engineering teams; turn feedback into a better platform. - Raise the quality bar through code review, strong test coverage, clear documentation, and mentoring. ## What you have - 4+ years of professional experience building and shipping client applications (ideally mobile iOS/Android or desktop) with strong application architecture fundamentals. - Hands-on experience with **React**, including component model, state management, and rendering behavior (ideally in an application setting such as React Native). - Experience designing shared frameworks, UI platforms, or core libraries other engineers build on. - Strong understanding of client rendering and layout performance across screen sizes, form factors, and orientations. - Debugging and profiling skills (e.g., diagnosing slow startup, visual stutter, memory pressure). - Experience with feature flagging, staged rollouts, and experiment-driven launches. - Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to align multiple teams around a technical plan. - Comfort working in a large, evolving codebase and migrating legacy code incrementally. ## Bonus points - Experience with **Luau** or **Lua**. - Experience with **React Navigation** (or comparable routing libraries). - Experience with native mobile development on iOS or Android. - Experience with server-driven UI / dynamic UI delivery systems. - Experience building cross-platform applications for mobile, desktop, and console. - Experience helping other engineers adopt a shared platform (documentation, migration guides, or direct support). ## Pay transparency (HQ: San Mateo, CA) - **Annual base pay range:** **$196,750 — $243,290 USD** - Actual base pay depends on job-related factors (background, training, experience, location, business needs, and market demand).
