Together, they deliver the data infrastructure layer that helps teams move, transform, and trust their data—from data movement through transformation to the context teams and AI systems rely on. **About the Role** As an Engineering Manager for the **Data Application Platform** team, you’ll lead engineers responsible for core systems that support data movement, including: - Scheduling and workflow management - Application security - Database systems This is a **hands-on leadership** role focused on growing people, building a healthy delivery process, and shaping technical direction—while staying close to the code and architecture to make sound technical decisions. **Location / Work Model** Full-time role based in **Oakland**. Hybrid model with **two days in the office each week**. **Technologies You’ll Use** - Java (JVM, JIT, GC tuning, thread management), JUnit - Postgres - Claude Code - Docker & Kubernetes - AWS, GCP - Bazel, Buildkite - Observability tools **What You’ll Do** - **Lead and grow the team:** hire, onboard, coach, and develop engineers; manage performance - **Own team delivery:** plan/prioritize work and guide execution to deliver reliably - **Set technical direction:** partner with senior/staff engineers on architecture for scheduling, workflow management, security, and database systems (reliability, scalability, security) - **Drive cross-team alignment:** coordinate shared technical work across platform and engineering - **Shape the roadmap:** translate customer needs, security requirements, and operational feedback into priorities - **Raise the engineering bar:** promote design docs, thoughtful code review, and durable engineering practices **Skills We’re Looking For** - Experience leading engineering teams (hiring, coaching, performance management) and shipping production systems - Strong engineering judgment and ability to engage credibly on architecture and tradeoffs - Familiarity with core platform domains (SQL, application security, scalability) and strong fundamentals (clean code, modularity, testability, backward compatibility) - Excellent written/verbal communication; experience in distributed/asynchronous teams - Demonstrated ability to drive cross-team initiatives and influence engineering direction - Track record of taking high-impact problems from definition through execution
