Applied AI Engineer, Startups (Physical AI)
Anthropic · San Francisco, CA
About this role
**Applied AI Engineer, Startups (Physical AI)** **About Anthropic** Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems—safe and beneficial for users and society. **About the role** As an Applied AI Engineer on the Startups team, you’ll be a trusted technical advisor to top AI-native startups building in the physical world (robotics, semiconductors, aerospace, manufacturing, and civil infrastructure). You’ll partner with both software and hardware teams to help them build products on Claude and run their own engineering with it. You’ll bridge what Claude can do with what it takes to build real-world systems—working with strong teams to help mechanical, electrical, and process engineers achieve a step change similar to agentic coding with tools like Claude Code. **Responsibilities** - Serve as a deep technical advisor to startups applying AI to engineering, manufacturing, operations, and more (whether Claude is embedded in their product or in their internal engineering workflows). - Work hands-on with startup software and hardware teams via pair programming and architecture reviews; understand workflows end to end (design/simulation → test → production → operations) so guidance fits real hardware development. - Develop prototypes and technical documentation, including evaluation suites, benchmarks grounded in real engineering tasks, AI engineering techniques, and architecture diagrams. - Create reference implementations and sample code that many companies can adopt (e.g., integrating Claude with CAD, simulation, design tools, or industrial automation). - Collaborate with Applied AI Architects to maintain context and continuity across customer engagements. - Identify recurring challenges in applying AI to physical systems (e.g., reading drawings, 3D geometry, board layout/routing, GD&T, latency/on-prem constraints, physical safety), then build repeatable evaluations and solutions and share insights with Product, Engineering, Research, and the broader Applied AI team. - Create technical content for startup audiences (documentation, tutorials, sample code). - Foster community engagement through hackathons, webinars, technical office hours, and startup-focused events. - Travel to customer sites for workshops, implementation guidance, and relationship building. **You may be a good fit if you have** - Deep engineering experience in a physical discipline (mechanical, electrical, aerospace, robotics, semiconductor, manufacturing, or civil engineering), gained by designing/building/operating real hardware—and strong opinions on how to bridge AI capabilities with how physical things are built. - 4+ years of technical experience as a software engineer, ML/research engineer, robotics/controls engineer, hardware/systems engineer, or technical founder. - Experience building LLM-powered applications (prompting, context engineering, agent architectures, evaluation frameworks, and scalable deployment), **or** - A track record applying AI to real engineering work across design, simulation, test, or production. - Experience with startups or high-growth companies, and enjoyment working with founders and small teams that move quickly. - Strong technical communication skills—able to translate complex AI concepts into architectural decisions and actionable implementation plans for both software and hardware audiences; able to run workshops/hackathons/developer events. - A collaborative generalist mindset (context-switchi
