**Applied AI Engineer, Startups (Life Sciences)** **About Anthropic** Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems—safe and beneficial for users and society. **About the role** As an Applied AI Engineer on the Startups team, you’ll be a trusted technical advisor to AI-native life sciences and biotech startups as they grow from early product to scale. You’ll lead deep technical engagements—partnering with startup engineering and scientific teams to help them build products on Claude and/or weave Claude into their research workflows. You’ll bridge what Claude can do with what life sciences need, advising on implementation and agent design, developing evaluation frameworks and scalable architectures, and creating technical resources that help startups succeed. **Responsibilities** - Serve as a deep technical advisor to life sciences and biotech startups, supporting Claude use whether it’s embedded in their product or in how they make discoveries - Work hands-on with engineering teams and scientists via pair programming and architecture reviews; understand scientific workflows end-to-end - Develop prototypes and technical documentation (evaluation suites, scientifically grounded benchmarks, AI engineering techniques, architecture diagrams) - Create reference implementations and sample code (e.g., example MCP servers for genomics platforms, literature databases, experimental repositories) plus agent skills for common scientific workflows - Collaborate with Applied AI Architects to maintain context and continuity across engagements - Identify patterns across deployments (e.g., heterogeneous data, auditability requirements, and the gap between prototypes and systems scientists trust) and feed insights back to Product, Engineering, Research, and Applied AI - Create technical content for startup audiences (documentation, tutorials, sample code) - Represent Anthropic in the life sciences startup ecosystem through hackathons, webinars, technical office hours, in-person founder events, and research show-and-tells - Travel to customer sites for workshops, implementation guidance, and relationship building **You may be a good fit if you have** - Deep experience in life sciences or biotech (e.g., genomics, drug discovery, molecular design, lab automation, clinical development) and strong views on bridging AI capabilities with real life sciences needs - 4+ years of technical experience (software/ML/research engineering, computational biology, research science, or technical founding), including production experience building LLM-powered applications (prompting, context engineering, agent architectures, evaluation frameworks, scalable deployment) **or** a track record applying AI to real scientific work - Experience with startups or high-growth companies; enjoy working with founders and small teams that move quickly - Strong technical communication skills—able to translate complex AI concepts into architectural decisions and actionable plans for both engineering and scientific audiences; comfortable running workshops/hackathons/developer events - Collaborative mindset, ability to context-switch across scientific domains and use cases, and a passion for making powerful technology safe and beneficial **Compensation (Annual Salary)** $280,000 — $320,000 USD **Logistics** - **Minimum education:** Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education/training/experience - **Required field of study:** Field relev
