Sr. Site Reliability Engineer- Federal
Zscaler · Santa Clara, California, USA
About this role
**Zscaler — Sr. Site Reliability Engineer (Federal) (Hybrid)** **Location:** Hybrid — onsite 3 days/week in Santa Clara, CA --- ### About the Role Zscaler is looking for a **Sr. Site Reliability Engineer (Production Engineer)** to join the **Zero Trust Exchange** team. This is a **software-first SRE** role focused on the **systems-level reliability and performance** of Zscaler’s high-throughput infrastructure—supporting **tens of billions of daily transactions** across a global, multi-region fleet. You’ll help shift the team from reactive incident response to engineering-driven reliability, working across **OS, network, and application debugging** to keep the platform operating safely at scale. --- ### What You’ll Do (Role Expectations) - Maintain **high availability** across large-scale **bare-metal Linux/BSD fleets**, **Kubernetes clusters**, and **custom routing stacks**. - Lead **full-cycle incident response** using low-level OS/network troubleshooting tools (e.g., **strace, lsof, tcpdump, iostat, vmstat, gdb**). - Automate infrastructure lifecycle management, service provisioning, configuration workflows, and release deployments using **Ansible, Python, and Go**. - Own **end-to-end telemetry** (**metrics, logs, traces**) using **Prometheus** and **OpenTelemetry**; define/enforce **SLOs** and **error budgets** to reduce alert noise. - Perform architectural reviews, **OS/kernel upgrades**, capacity/performance tuning, and strict **CI/CD validation** prior to production rollouts; embed operability standards (telemetry, rollback safety, SLO readiness) into service design. --- ### Who You Are (Success Profile) - Thrive in ambiguity and build the path as you go. - Act like an owner—bias for action, integrity, and the ability to move between strategy and hands-on execution. - Enjoy solving hard problems with a strong focus on impact. - High-trust collaborator—embrace a challenge culture with ongoing feedback. - Growth-minded learner—seek feedback and continuously improve. --- ### What We’re Looking For (Minimum Qualifications) - **US Citizenship is required** (due to the nature of assigned customers). - Foundational understanding of **AI/ML** and experience leveraging/securing/positioning AI-driven solutions to optimize outcomes. - **3+ years** in **Site Reliability Engineering, Production Engineering, or Systems Engineering** for high-scale, low-latency production platforms. - Proven ability to write and debug executable code live (**Python, Go, or Bash**) and hands-on experience writing **Ansible** playbooks for infrastructure automation. - Deep knowledge of **Linux OS internals** and kernel troubleshooting (e.g., inodes, open file descriptors, process states, and storage discrepancy analysis like **df vs du**). - Strong networking fundamentals and packet-level analysis (DNS workflows, TLS handshakes, TCP/IP mechanics, **tcpdump**). --- ### Preferred Qualifications - Hands-on experience operating **FreeBSD/BSD** in production. - Experience scaling/troubleshooting **Kubernetes** in high-traffic, low-latency environments and workflow orchestration platforms (e.g., **Temporal**). - Deep experience with **Prometheus/OpenTelemetry**, or using **AI/ML/AIOps** tools for automated root-cause analysis. --- ### Compensation (Pay Transparency) **Base Pay Range:** **$118,400 — $148,000 USD** --- ### Benefits (Highlights) - Various health plans - Time off plans (vacation/sick) - Parental leave options - Retirement options - Education
