About this role

## Senior Software Engineer, Payments Transaction Risk ### About Airbnb Airbnb was born in 2007 when two hosts welcomed three guests to their San Francisco home, and has since grown to over 5 million hosts who have welcomed over 2 billion guest arrivals in almost every country across the globe. ### The Community You Will Join Airbnb Payments enables people worldwide to exchange money frictionlessly through easy-to-use payments services. It’s a core strategy to support Airbnb’s “belongs anywhere” mission. We’re building a world-class payments platform that moves billions of dollars across 191 countries, with 75 currencies, through a complex ecosystem of payments partners. We build and maintain our own in-house global payments platform because no existing solution provides the global reach we need. As the platform grows, we’ll add new payment partners, global licenses, compliance and regulation controls, and new payment experiences for guests and hosts. ### The Difference You Will Make As a **Senior Software Engineer** on the **Payments Risk Engineering** team, you’ll design and build scalable systems and robust infrastructure to **detect, mitigate, and resolve risk** across the payments platform—protecting communities and businesses from malicious activity and fraud. You’ll work closely with **product, data science, and operations** to build highly available, real-time risk services, understand evolving risk scenarios, and help make Airbnb the safest and easiest-to-use payments platform. ### A Typical Day - Build and maintain a long-term technology stack with well-defined, service-oriented APIs that are modular, granular, observable, and efficient. - Collaborate with data scientists, product managers, and cross-functional partners to build insights, develop features, and respond to fraud attacks and risk issues. - Maintain integrations with third-party vendors, payments networks, and processors to empower in-house risk systems. - Develop and iterate on risk detection, mitigation, and resolution strategies as scenarios and requirements evolve. - Drive continuous monitoring and alerting to improve quality and observability of risk systems. - Partner with other engineering teams across Airbnb to advance engineering processes and technical foundations. ### Your Expertise - **5+ years** of relevant experience (Payments/Fintech) as a **backend** software engineer. - Proficient in at least one major programming language (preferably **Java/Kotlin/Python**). Experience with **React** (or similar JS libraries) is a plus. - Experience with architectural patterns for large, high-scale web applications (e.g., well-designed APIs, high-volume data pipelines, efficient algorithms). - Ability to deliver end-to-end (ideation → planning/scoping → implementation → experimental A/B testing). - Strong code quality, automated testing, and engineering best practices. - Experience working collaboratively in cross-functional teams (product, data science, design, operations). - Familiarity with experimentation and machine learning techniques. - Strong communication and attention to detail; able to make data-driven decisions and articulate tradeoffs. - Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree (preferably CS) or equivalent experience. - Fraud/spam detection/mitigation in payments is a **huge plus** (not required). ### Your Location - **US - Remote Eligible** - The role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites, as agreed with your m
