Staff Software Engineer - Sensing
Canopyworks · San Francisco Bay Area
About this role
**Staff Software Engineer — Sensing (SF Bay Area)** **About Canopy** At Canopy, we build technology that helps make healthcare environments safer for the people delivering care. Our connected safety platform powers real-time communication, response coordination, and location intelligence across hospitals and complex care environments. We operate in high-trust, high-reliability environments where software quality, operational resilience, and customer experience matter deeply. This role is about shaping technical direction and how we build—at both the systems and organizational level. --- **The Role** Canopy is seeking a **Staff Software Engineer** to develop our next-generation **sensing data pipeline**—building the “physical full stack” from **firmware and edge algorithms** to **backend and frontend services**. You’ll bridge **physical hardware and cloud systems**, applying physics-based modeling to solve complex sensing challenges at scale. This is a unique opportunity to translate hardware schematics and firmware design into products that work in harsh environments and support life-saving outcomes. We also care deeply about building highly automated development environments to accelerate prototyping and verification cycles—so mission-critical systems are built faster, safer, and with greater precision. --- **How you’ll make 10X impact** - Drive development of next-generation hardware used by millions of healthcare professionals - Design and implement robust firmware; build and maintain a powerful **HIL automation platform** to accelerate development and enforce system safety - Apply **signal processing** and **machine learning** for on-device algorithms, cloud pipelines, and field-ops tools - Collaborate across hardware and software teams to launch production-grade sensing devices at scale - Apply systems-level design intuition across power management and communication protocols - Engineer industrial-grade, fault-tolerant designs for reliability during unexpected power events --- **We’re excited about you because** - You enjoy building and thrive in teams that care deeply about people - Deep proficiency in **Rust, C, C++, Python**, with practical experience in **RTOS** (e.g., Zephyr, FreeRTOS) and **Embedded Linux** (e.g., Yocto, Buildroot) - Strong grasp of digital electronics, board bring-up/validation/debugging, **BSP**, and peripheral communication (**SPI, I2C, UART**, interrupt-driven design) - Ability to troubleshoot complex systems using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and diagnostic tools at the hardware/software boundary - Experience building deterministic, timing-sensitive firmware that integrates with cloud-native data pipelines - Creative approaches to amassing training data quickly to develop production-grade algorithms - Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field --- **It’d be great if you also had** - Experience in applied signal processing and machine learning - Experience in healthcare, GIS, safety-critical, or high-availability environments - Experience scaling SaaS platforms through rapid growth - Familiarity with event-driven architectures, real-time systems, or location-aware platforms - Interest/experience in contributing to: - Distributed systems, APIs, and service-oriented architectures - Modern full-stack application development - DevOps, SRE, or platform engineering practices --- **How We Work** We value engineers who: - Care deeply about the
