Software Engineer, Backend (Product)
Claylabs · New York
About this role
## About Clay AI Clay is building the engine companies use to grow. Clay predicts the next best action for your business and helps you take it—starting with aggregated B2B data, then expanding into infrastructure for personalized campaigns (emails, ads, landing pages, and workflows), and now building agents to help companies grow. Clay already supports thousands of customers, including Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and Visa. ## The Role: Software Engineer, Backend (Product) Clay is looking for a **backend product engineer** to own the systems behind the parts of Clay customers use every day. At Clay, **the backend is the product**—enrichment, signals, workflows, and agents are all surfaces where engineering and product decisions are the same decision. You’ll own a surface **end to end**: decide what to build with design and GTM partners, ship quickly, watch real customers use it, and then make it faster, more reliable, and more capable. You’ll wear both a **PM hat** and an **engineering hat**. ## What You’ll Do - **Own a product surface end to end**: from problem definition through shipped, measured outcomes. - **Wear the PM hat**: scope your work with design, data science, and GTM partners; write specs, cut what doesn’t matter, and defend your decisions. - **Talk to customers directly**: sit in on calls, read tickets, and watch people work inside Clay. - **Ship fast, then learn**: small teams, short cycles, low process—get a real version in front of customers quickly. - **Build the systems that make features possible**: design data models, APIs, and jobs behind new capabilities; keep them fast and reliable as usage grows. - **Up-level the codebase**: improve performance and reliability; practice “negative maintenance.” - **Mentor and learn from other engineers**: help the team grow in your strengths and learn from theirs. ## What You’ll Bring - **4+ years** of hands-on engineering experience building products people actually use. - A desire to be **both an engineer and a product manager**—you’ll drive and own surfaces end to end. - **Strong backend fundamentals**: API/schema design, SQL (preferably Postgres), query optimization, and the instinct to prevent failures before they happen. - **Bias toward impact and shipping**: results-oriented, learn from production. - **Empathetic communication**: express nuanced ideas clearly for different audiences; prioritize curiosity in disagreements. - **Care about craft**: bug-free, understandable code; raise the engineering bar. - Commitment to **diverse perspectives**. ## Nice to Haves - Experience with **systems and data at scale** (data pipelines, event ingestion, or large production systems). - Depth in one or more of: **Redis, Postgres, Elasticsearch, OpenSearch**. - Advanced proficiency optimizing **serverless workloads on AWS**. - Experience building with **LLMs/agents as a product surface** (not just a tool). - Experience with Clay’s tech stack: - **React, TypeScript, Python, Node.js** - **AWS**: Aurora (Postgres), ElastiCache (Redis), ECR, ECS (Fargate), Lambda, OpenSearch - **IaC**: Terraform - **Deployment tools**: CircleCI, Netlify, Playwright - **Observability**: CloudWatch, Datadog, Mezmo
