**Waymo — 2027 Summer Intern (PhD, Research, Post Training)** Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company on a mission to be the world’s most trusted driver. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo’s fully autonomous ride-hail service and supports a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. **Team / Focus** The Waymo AI Foundations team develops machine learning solutions for open problems in autonomous driving, with the goal of safely operating Waymo vehicles in dozens of cities and under all driving conditions. Current focus areas include reinforcement learning, learning from demonstration, generative modeling, Bayesian inference, hierarchical learning, and robust evaluation. **What you’ll do** - Define research goals, set up datasets and training code to improve model performance, analyze results, and define the next experiments - Write clear documentation to communicate with team members - Use team feedback to adjust experiment setup, research directions, and research plans **What you have** - Currently pursuing a PhD in Computer Science, Robotics, Machine Learning, or a related quantitative field - Knowledge of pre-training and post-training of large foundation models - Hands-on experience training modern AI models - Strong analytical skills to interpret experiment results and form verifiable hypotheses - Ability to write bug-free code and implement correct software with minimal guidance **We prefer** - Strong research background in robotics or self-driving cars - Familiarity with modern AI infrastructure and tooling (e.g., PyTorch, JAX) and comfort working in cluster/server environments - Proven research impact (e.g., publishing multiple papers in top conferences) **Notes** - Hybrid onsite internship - Resumes accepted on a rolling basis until the role is filled - To be considered for multiple roles, apply to each one individually (please apply to the top 3 roles you’re interested in) **Pay (Hourly PhD Pay)** - **$85–$85 USD/hour**
