About this role
**Principal Software Engineer, Core Experiences (Remote Eligible)** Smartsheet empowers teams to manage work seamlessly and scale solutions smarter. In this role, you’ll help build the platform and front end behind Smartsheet’s most used work surfaces—sheets, reports, and dashboards—while enabling AI agents to safely read, write, and analyze the same underlying data at machine scale. --- ## What you will do - **Architect the Sheet Data Platform:** Own end-to-end design for how sheet data is stored, tiered, and served across transactional systems and the lakehouse platform, including data lifecycle/retention, schema evolution, async access patterns, and consistency guarantees. - **Design for People and Agents at Scale:** Shape services and APIs that support real-time collaboration for millions of users and high-scale agent access. Make trade-offs between latency, consistency, and cost, and document decisions. - **See Around Corners:** Identify major technical opportunities and risks across Core Views and dependent platforms early. Prototype and turn them into initiatives leadership will invest in. - **Lead High-Stakes Migrations:** Plan and execute changes to petabyte-scale production data with zero customer impact—phased cutovers, backfill/reconciliation, verification at scale, and rollback paths. - **Own Delivery End to End:** Scope multi-quarter efforts into phased plans with milestones, track progress across teams, surface risks early, and ship on time. - **Carry Architecture Across Org Boundaries:** Partner with Product, Data Platform, AI Platform, and Infrastructure to align direction and influence roadmaps you don’t directly own. - **Set the Standard:** Drive industry best practices through architecture decisions, RFCs, standards, and design reviews. - **Lead on AI-Driven Engineering:** Define patterns and guardrails for integrating AI capabilities into complex multi-system architectures and how engineers build software. - **Stay Hands-On:** Solve complex problems with simple, high-performing code in **Java** on **AWS** and **Kubernetes**; lead deep code reviews and mentor senior/staff engineers. - **Own Production at the Deepest Level:** Participate in on-call and lead resolution of the most complex incidents; drive root-cause work to improve resilience. --- ## You have - **10+ years** building highly scalable, highly available, low-latency systems (including several years at **Principal/Staff** level). Production-quality **Java or Kotlin** and comfort across the stack. - Experience designing and operating **async, event-driven distributed systems** on AWS (or comparable cloud), including ordering, idempotency, back-pressure, partial failure, and cross-service consistency. - Ownership of systems backed by **very large relational or distributed datastores**—tuning, scaling, and migrating data without customer impact. - Track record taking **fuzzy, high-stakes problems** from prototype to production across multiple teams with clear phased plans, early risk identification, and outcomes. - Written design docs/RFCs/standards that changed how engineering orgs build and continued to hold up after you moved on. - Experience building **LLM-enriched workflows** delivering measurable value in SaaS products, with grounded opinions on what AI changes (and doesn’t) in software development. - Degree in Computer Science/Engineering (or related) **or** equivalent practical experience. - Legally eligible to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basi
