**At Affirm** Affirm exists for the moments that matter—giving people a clear, predictable way to pay over time, with no hidden fees, no surprises, and no tradeoffs on what matters most. --- ## Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Fraud Decisioning) We’re looking for a **Staff Engineer** to lead projects and initiatives on the **Fraud Decisioning** team. You’ll build tools and systems that empower Affirm’s fraud-fighting capabilities, partner with cross-functional teams to adopt and monitor them, and use analytics and data-driven decisions to improve the performance and quality of fraud deciders. **Mission:** Drive growth while protecting Affirm, buyers, and merchants by evaluating risk at critical points in the user journey, adapting to the evolving fraud landscape, and introducing new fraud-fighting capabilities. --- ## What You’ll Do - Work across the org to plan and execute large, cross-functional initiatives (project definition, technical specification, task breakdown, delivery, monitoring, and maintenance). - Create simple, elegant designs that are easy to deploy and debug—while anticipating the “unhappy path.” Write high-quality code that others can understand and leverage. - Review others’ work and provide constructive feedback to maintain high, consistent quality standards. - Lead and mentor engineers; provide context and help engineers take ownership of their parts of the initiative. - Incorporate stakeholder needs and opinions, advocate for ideas, and build shared understanding so all voices are heard. - Conduct technical and soft-skill evaluations to inform hiring decisions; develop and review technical content and requirements for the interview process. --- ## What We Look For - **6–10+ years** of experience as a software engineer with leadership responsibilities and experience mentoring junior engineers. - Experience architecting, building, launching, coding, and maintaining complex systems. - Passion for working with cross-functional teams (Product, ML, Analytics, Business). - A technical leader and team builder who can mentor best practices. - Strong ability to synthesize complex business, product, and technical requirements into high-quality system designs and software. - A system architect who can break business and product requirements into modules/components. - Either equivalent practical experience or a **Bachelor’s degree** in a related field. --- ## Compensation & Location - **#LI-Remote** (Remote-first with flexibility) - **Base pay range (CA, WA, NY, NJ, CT):** $230,000 – $290,000 - **Base pay range (all other U.S. states):** $204,000 – $264,000 Affirm typically offers new hires at the start of the pay range.
