About this role
**SpaceX — Sr. Software Engineer (AI Data Engineering)** SpaceX is building the technologies to enable human life on Mars. ## Role Join the Artificial Intelligence Data Engineering Software team to build AI-powered tools and automation that solve real engineering problems for launch vehicles and spacecraft. Your work will help automate recurring, time-consuming tasks—such as reviewing flight and test data and investigating anomalies—so engineers can focus on hard engineering. You’ll work end-to-end: scoping solutions with engineers, rolling them out, measuring time saved, and maintaining tools as vehicles and processes evolve. ## Responsibilities - Partner with engineering teams to identify the most time-consuming, repetitive, or error-prone work, then design and build automation - Build automation to process large volumes of engineering data (telemetry, hardware design databases, configuration files, manufacturing/test records) to automate review, flag anomalies, and surface insights - Design agentic AI systems, multi-agent workflows, and MCP servers so engineers can query, analyze, and act on data across internal systems - Integrate tools into CI/CD pipelines, mission workflows, and review/sign-off processes - Build internal web dashboards for mission status, open work, and data review results - Rapidly prototype, iterate, and take tools to production-grade, maintainable implementations - Thoroughly test and validate tools, including evaluating AI outputs against known-good results - Prioritize work by ROI and track engineering hours saved ## Basic Qualifications - Bachelor’s degree in CS, data science, engineering, math, or physics **OR** 4+ years of professional experience building automation for practical engineering use cases - 5+ years of software engineering experience focused on automation tools and/or AI integrations (professional and personal projects count) - 5+ years of Python programming experience ## Preferred Skills & Experience - Proven track record of building tools that engineers/end users adopt (requirements gathering + iteration) - Experience analyzing large engineering/scientific datasets (e.g., time-series telemetry, sensor data, logs) using pandas/NumPy - Built code/configuration generators that transform a source of truth into validated outputs - Hands-on experience with complex agentic AI systems and multi-agent workflows (prompt/context engineering, tool/function calling, MCP/agent skills) - Ability to design evaluations for LLM-based tools and know when deterministic approaches are better - Strong integration skills with REST APIs; ability to quickly learn internal tools/data sources - Working knowledge of PostgreSQL, non-relational, and vector databases; strong SQL - Full-stack experience (e.g., React/TypeScript frontends with Python backends like FastAPI/Flask) - Proficiency on Linux; strong Git, testing, CI/CD, and monitoring - Familiarity deploying containerized apps with Docker and Kubernetes - Familiarity with hardware engineering concepts (schematics/wiring, sensors, propulsion, controls, test/manufacturing) or a background as a hardware/test engineer who moved into software - Strong communication skills and ability to explain technical tradeoffs - Self-directed ownership of ambiguous problems from idea through long-term maintenance ## Additional Requirements - Willing to work extended hours and weekends as needed ## Compensation & Benefits - **Pay Range (Level 3): $165,000.00 – $265,000.00** -
