Staff Software Engineer – Integrations Platform
Zipline · South San Francisco, California, USA
About this role
## About Zipline Zipline is the world’s largest and most experienced drone delivery service, on a mission to serve all humans equally by ensuring access to food, medicine, and essential goods anytime, anywhere. Zipline designs, builds, and operates a global autonomous logistics system—delivering critical supplies quickly and reliably across four continents. ## About You and The Role As a **Staff Software Engineer** (Integrations Platform), you’ll own the technical direction of Zipline’s integrations platform as a hands-on individual contributor. You’ll shape architecture and roadmap across teams, build production software, and enable engineers to deliver partner API integrations. You’ll create **frontend and backend SDKs**, reusable connector patterns, development environments, and automated quality checks so engineering teams can build reliable integrations independently. Initial applications include **POS and order-aggregation connectors**, **menu synchronization**, and **merchant workflows**. ## What You’ll Do - **Enable partner experiences:** Build frontend and backend SDKs, integration framework, connector templates, and developer tooling for fast, consistent partner API integrations. - **Set the platform architecture:** Define interfaces between partner-specific connectors and Zipline’s core platform (order lifecycle, auth, data mapping, monitoring). Establish API/SDK versioning and compatibility practices. - **Make development self-service:** Create sandbox environments, partner API simulators, and automated contract tests. - **Make launches repeatable:** Define integration acceptance criteria and automated release checks for correctness, failure handling, and operational readiness. - **Simplify onboarding:** Build documentation, reference implementations, and onboarding workflows to reduce ramp time. - **Keep integrations reliable:** Standardize retry, idempotency, and fallback behavior; own monitoring, runbooks, incident response, and remediation. - **Build for lasting scale:** Evolve partner and partner-site data models to support long-term finance and operations needs. - **Multiply engineering impact:** Lead technical reviews, mentor engineers, and improve the framework using recurring issues. - **Guide enterprise launches:** Partner with external teams, Product, and Commercial to translate requirements into a platform roadmap and shorten time from signed deal to production. ## What You’ll Bring - **Staff-level delivery:** 7+ years building and operating production backend or distributed systems with architecture and delivery ownership. - **Developer platform experience:** Experience building developer platforms/SDKs/tooling used by other engineers (ideally for external API integrations). Treat API usability, documentation, and compatibility as product. - **Distributed systems depth:** API design, data modeling, async workflows, schema evolution, eventual consistency, idempotent processing. - **Reusable integration design:** Turn varied external APIs into reusable connector patterns with testable contracts; experience with automated integration testing and dev environments. - **Production accountability:** Observability, on-call support, incident investigation, and improvements that prevent recurring failures. - **Hands-on engineering depth:** Proficiency in **Go, Python, or a comparable backend language**; experience building libraries/CLI tools/workflows. - **Frontend SDK judgment:** Experience building/supporting front
