## Staff Software Engineer — Payments Acquiring Since opening in 2009, **Square** has evolved alongside the world of commerce—enabling sellers to take payments and never miss a sale. Block has expanded into integrated, omnichannel tools that help merchants sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. At the center of this is **financial services at the point of sale**, so merchants can access business loans and manage cash flow in one place. --- ## The Role The **Financial Platform Acquiring** team owns the acquiring side of card payments for **Square, Cash App, and Afterpay**. When someone pays with a card at a Square seller, through Afterpay, or uses a card to move money in or out of Cash App, our systems ensure the payment happens correctly—every time. You’ll work on systems that: - Take in and tokenize card data from **chip, tap, digital wallets, and online checkout** - Route payments and get them **authorized** via direct network connections and acquiring partners - **Capture, clear, and settle** payments in the US and internationally - Deliver low-latency authorization responses (including under a second for tap scenarios) As a **Staff Software Engineer** on the Acquiring team, you’ll bring deep card payments expertise to complex technical work, including: - Expanding **direct network** and **acquirer** connections - Delivering **network mandates** - Making it **cheaper and more reliable** to accept cards This is a **hands-on** role where you’ll build systems and tooling, debug at the **message level**, and turn payments expertise into durable capabilities other engineers can use. --- ## What You’ll Own You’ll lead **one or two projects at a time**, shipping meaningful improvements at Block’s scale.
