This role is a career-defining opportunity to solve complex problems with real-world stakes—moving fast, executing with excellence, and owning outcomes. --- ## **Staff Software Engineer — Device Identity (Java)** ### **About the team** The **Device Identity and Access** organization is a foundational pillar within Okta Research and Development (ORD), aligned to Okta’s **Zero Trust** vision. The mission: transform the device into a secure, trusted, and effortless identity factor. You’ll help engineer the end-to-end device experience across **FastPass**, **Okta Device Access (ODA)**, and **Device Assurance**—including continuous authentication, device lifecycle management, and cloud services that analyze real-time trust and assurance signals for frictionless, passwordless access across **Windows, macOS, iOS, Linux, and Android**. --- ## **What you’ll be doing** - **Drive cross-functional collaboration** with Product, Design, and QA to deliver critical initiatives. - **Lead design and implementation** of new features and services in the core Java platform (from conception to deployment). - **Define and champion engineering best practices**, contributing to technical designs, proposals, and long-term architecture decisions. - **Mentor and coach** engineers through code reviews and technical guidance, setting a high bar for quality and security. - **Develop maintainable software** with comprehensive test coverage; improve testing and CI/CD strategies. - **Create and maintain technical documentation** and foster knowledge sharing. - **Champion AI-native engineering practices** in the PDLC using AI coding assistants—while maintaining rigorous security and code quality standards. --- ## **What you’ll bring to the role** - **7+ years** building scalable, high-performance **server-side** features with **Java** and **Spring**. - Deep expertise with **Postgres or MySQL** (schema design, query optimization). - Experience designing, building, and securing **RESTful APIs** for large-scale systems. - Strong server-side fundamentals: **caching, asynchronous processing, multi-threading**. - Knowledge of **design patterns**, scalability patterns, security engineering, and OOP principles. - Experience in **agile** environments with strong **CI/CD** and automated testing. - Excellent communication skills; able to explain complex technical concepts and influence direction. - Proficiency using **AI coding assistants** (e.g., GitHub Copilot) while maintaining high standards for quality and security. --- ## **Nice-to-haves** - Familiarity with **Identity & Access Management** protocols/technologies (e.g., **FIDO, U2F, WebAuthn, SSO, SAML, OAuth, Federation**). - Cybersecurity knowledge and secure coding practices; certifications such as **CISSP** or **Security+**. - Experience with **ReactJS**. - Exposure to **gRPC**. - Exposure to **microservices** architecture. --- ## **Education** - Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science (or equivalent experience). --- ## **Location / Work model** - **#LI-Hybrid** - **#LI-MA1** --- ## **Compensation (Canada)** Annual base salary range for candidates located in Canada: **$160,000–$220,000 CAD**.
