About this role
**About Anthropic** Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems—AI that is safe and beneficial for users and society. **About the role** Anthropic’s Infrastructure organization builds and operates the distributed systems that train, serve, and secure our AI models—systems that every other team depends on. As a **Staff+ Software Engineer on Research Systems Engineering**, you’ll work directly with Research teams to build reliable, scalable, high-performance infrastructure. This is a cross-functional systems role where you’ll scope and lead complex, multi-month infrastructure projects and resolve performance and scalability bottlenecks that limit how fast we can grow. **Key responsibilities** - Independently scope and lead complex, multi-month infrastructure projects—from an ambiguous starting point through to a production system - Develop deep understanding and partnerships with researchers and Research teams to deliver for them - Mentor other engineers and help raise the technical bar - Drive alignment on technical direction across multiple teams in ambiguous problem spaces - Take ownership of reliability, scalability, and security as usage and complexity grow - Lead operational process improvements across Infrastructure (incident response, postmortems, on-call rotations) so the team learns from every incident **Minimum qualifications** - Experience designing, building, and operating large-scale distributed systems or infrastructure in production - Track record of independently scoping and delivering complex, ambiguous, multi-month technical projects - Prior experience as a technical lead or mentor - Experience making architectural decisions others build on - Strong software engineering fundamentals and proficiency in at least one language (e.g., Python, Rust, Go, Java) - Experience with modern cloud infrastructure, including Kubernetes and infrastructure-as-code on AWS and/or GCP - Strong written and verbal communication skills, including driving alignment across teams/stakeholders **Preferred qualifications** - 10+ years of software engineering experience (excluding internships) - Experience with ML infrastructure (GPUs, TPUs, Trainium) and associated networking (e.g., NCCL) - Low-level systems experience (e.g., Linux kernel tuning, eBPF) - Background in security or privacy engineering best practices **Compensation** Annual Salary: **$320,000 — $485,000 USD** **Logistics** - Minimum education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education/training/experience - Required field of study: Field relevant to the role (via coursework, training, or professional experience) - Minimum years of experience: Correlates with internal job level requirements - Location-based hybrid policy: Expected to be in one of our offices at least **25%** of the time (some roles may require more) - Visa sponsorship: We sponsor visas, but not for every role/candidate; if offered, we’ll make reasonable efforts and use an immigration lawyer **How we’re different** We believe high-impact AI research is “big science.” We work as a single cohesive team on a few large-scale efforts, value impact over smaller puzzles, and treat AI research as an empirical science. Communication skills are highly valued. **Come work with us!** Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco, offering competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental le
