Fully remote and global, Camunda is transforming into an AI-first organization built on its own platform. ### About the Role As a **Senior Software Engineer (Backend)** on Camunda’s **Distributed Systems** team, you’ll help build and evolve a **durable, highly available, horizontally scalable streaming platform** that underpins **Camunda 8’s Orchestration Cluster** and powers mission-critical customer processes. You’ll work on technically challenging projects such as: - Expanding Camunda’s **multi-Raft** implementation - Developing and improving a **SWIM-based** cluster membership algorithm - Building high-performance **network and disk I/O pipelines** You’ll partner closely with **Product, Design, QA, Sales**, and peers to deliver and directly influence the evolution of the platform. ### What You Will Do - Design, build, and maintain backend services for the distributed streaming platform, ensuring **durability, high availability, and horizontal scalability** - Lead **medium-to-large engineering initiatives (3+ months)** end-to-end (requirements, solution design, project plans, delivery) - Mature **disaster recovery and resilience**, including evolving an online **backup/restore API** and improving **multi-region / multi-tenant** capabilities - Build developer and operator tooling to help teams **understand, troubleshoot, and safely operate** complex distributed systems in production - Improve engineering effectiveness by collaborating on **CI, testing, and local development workflows** to reduce PR time-to-merge and parallel-feature overhead - Participate in **L3 support and on-call**, partnering with Support and SRE to resolve complex, performance-sensitive production issues and feed learnings back into the product/platform ### What You Will Bring to the Role **Must Haves** - **7+ years** professional experience as a software engineer, with strong focus on **backend and/or distributed systems** - Proven experience leading **medium-to-large initiatives (~3+ months)**: breaking down ambiguous problems, writing clear designs/plans, coordinating across teams, and driving predictable delivery - Hands-on experience building highly concurrent, data-intensive software with deep understanding of **low-level network and disk I/O** (throughput, latency, backpressure, batching, failure modes) - Ability to work autonomously and navigate ambiguity—break problems into concrete steps and drive to completion - Strong communication and collaboration in a **remote-first** environment; translate business needs into actionable technical work **Nice to Haves** - Experience building workflow automation or process orchestration software - Experience with distributed systems algorithms/protocols such as **Raft, Paxos, SWIM, and/or CRDTs** - Familiarity with observability (logging, metrics, tracing) and integrating it into development and incident lifecycle; ideally L3/on-call experience - Deep knowledge of the **Java Virtual Machine**, especially memory model and performance in highly concurrent, data-intensive workloads ### Location / Work Model - **Fully remote** (role tags include **
