Data Platform Engineer
Employerdirect Health Care · Dallas, TX - Hybrid (3x in office/week)
About this role
## About Lantern Lantern is a specialty care platform connecting people with the best care when they need it most. By curating a Network of Excellence of top specialists for surgery, cancer care, infusions, and more, Lantern delivers excellent care with significant cost savings to employers and their workforces. Lantern also pairs members with a dedicated care team (including Care Advocates and nurses) throughout their care journey. ## Role Overview Lantern’s data organization is moving from a centralized model to one where domain teams (Data Engineering, Data Ops, Analytics Engineering) build and own their own data products. The platform team enables that shift by providing self-serve infrastructure, governance automation, and access controls—so domain teams can build on top of the platform rather than relying on it for every change. This is a hands-on administration and enablement role. You will administer the Databricks platform and the Lakebase (managed Postgres) estate, enforce standards through platform controls and automation, and serve as the front door for domain teams—from project kickoffs through day-to-day unblocking. **Location:** Hybrid — at least 3 days/week in our Dallas, TX offices ## Responsibilities - **Platform Administration:** Administer Azure Databricks and Unity Catalog to architecture standards (workspace/metastore configuration, catalog/schema structure, cluster policies, compute cost management, spend visibility, and chargeback reporting). Provide feedback to standards owners when standards block teams or no longer fit. - **Self-Serve Enablement:** Build self-serve infrastructure (provisioning workflows, templates, and access patterns) so domain teams can manage their own data products without constant platform-team dependency. - **Postgres Database Administration (Lakebase):** Act as DBA for the platform’s Postgres estate (provision/decommission, user/role management, connection configuration, performance tuning, upgrades, backups, point-in-time recovery, incident response). Maintain sync patterns between Lakebase and the lakehouse. - **Infrastructure-as-Code:** Build and maintain Terraform-based IaC for Azure (resource groups, networking/private endpoints, Entra ID app registrations, service principals, Key Vault) to ensure changes are reviewable, repeatable, and auditable. - **Access & Governance Model:** Implement/enforce approved access model across lakehouse + Postgres (Unity Catalog grants, OBO patterns, ABAC, row-level security, data masking, role-based access). - **Audit & Lineage:** Build audit/lineage for decentralized ownership (audit logging, lineage capture, sensitivity tagging, and an event-sourced audit layer where Databricks can’t capture app-layer events). Support incident response when this layer breaks. - **Observability:** Operate platform observability across Databricks, Lakebase, and supporting Azure services (Datadog integration, metrics/log export, alerting, SLOs). - **Reliability & Disaster Recovery:** Manage infrastructure lifecycle (provisioning/decommissioning, backup/restore validation, DR testing) for platform and database workloads. - **Support Coverage:** No overnight on-call rotation. Occasional availability outside core hours to support scheduled deployments and major incidents. - **CI/CD:** Support CI/CD for data workloads across domain teams (notebooks, jobs, DLT pipelines, dbt projects, Databricks Asset Bundles, Lakebase schema migrations). - **GitHub Integration:** Ma
