Software Engineer, Medical Imaging
Neuralink · Austin, Texas, United States
About this role
**About Neuralink** We are creating devices that enable a bi-directional interface with the brain—restoring movement to the paralyzed, restoring sight to the blind, and revolutionizing how humans interact with their digital world. **Team Description** The Surgery Engineering team develops and manages custom hardware and processes for neurosurgical procedures (excluding the R1 Robot and Operator Station). Responsibilities span the full surgical process, including patient positioning, incision management, craniectomy, precise implant placement, thread management during robot-assisted insertion, surgical site irrigation, implant installation, and closure. The team also supports safe explantation and upgrade procedures for implants, and provides mechanical engineering support to animal care, histology, and BCI teams. **Role: Medical Imaging Software Engineer** Work with engineers and clinicians to build tools that enable rapid and precise placement of the Neuralink implant and its electrodes relative to targets determined by functional imaging (e.g., fMRI). You will own the end-to-end medical imaging pipeline—from ingesting images from the scanner/imaging modality, to fusing imaging techniques, to navigating in real-world coordinates of the patient reference frame during surgery. **Responsibilities** - Import and manipulate 3D medical imaging datasets - Build and deploy applications to manage large volumes of medical image data - Build and deploy a GUI for engineers and clinicians to place electrode targets based on pre-operative imaging - Develop a system to pass preoperative medical images to the surgical robot - Interface with intraoperative hardware for patient and tool tracking **Required Qualifications** - Evidence of exceptional ability in engineering or computer science - Proven track record of shipping software with real-world impact - Understanding of how systems work at a fundamental level - Practical proficiency in linear algebra - Experience coding in Python, Rust, and/or JavaScript - Experience manipulating and visualizing 3D objects (e.g., game development, VR/AR, medical imaging) - Bachelor’s degree in a technical field (Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, etc.) **or** equivalent practical experience **Preferred Qualifications** - Experience with medical imaging formats such as DICOM and NIfTI - Experience working with protected health information - Knowledge of container management and orchestration - Experience with infrastructure development **Expected Compensation** - **Base Salary Range:** $113,000 — $188,000 USD - Neuralink also offers equity compensation (RSUs) for full-time employees. **What We Offer** - Opportunity to change the world with top experts across disciplines - Growth potential and rapid advancement for high-impact contributions - Medical, dental, and vision insurance (PPO) - Paid holidays - Commuter benefits - Meals provided - Equity (RSUs) *(Temporary Employees & Interns excluded)* - 401(k) plan *(Interns initially excluded until they work 1,000 hours)* - Parental leave *(Temporary Employees & Interns excluded)* - Flexible time off *(Temporary Employees & Interns excluded)*
