**PhD Machine Learning Software Engineer Intern (Summer 2027)** **About the Role** Join Lyft's Applied AI team as a PhD Machine Learning Engineer Intern. You'll own a research project from start to finish—framing problems, developing new methods, and evaluating them on real data with millions of users. Work closely with a Staff ML Engineer mentor to turn open-ended research questions into working systems, with the goal of publishing at a top ML venue. **Key Responsibilities** • Own a research project end-to-end: problem framing, literature review, method proposal, and rigorous evaluation • Design, build, train, and test ML models in reinforcement learning, sequential decision-making, and personalization • Write production-quality code for Lyft's data and ML infrastructure • Partner with Product Managers, Data Scientists, and ML Engineers • Analyze experimental data and communicate findings to technical and non-technical audiences • Prepare results for peer-reviewed publication • Participate in code and spec reviews **Required Experience** • Currently pursuing a PhD in CS, ML, Statistics, OR, Applied Math, or related field • **Graduation date between December 2027 and Summer 2028 (required)** • Track record of ML research (publications, preprints, or substantial projects) • Strong foundation in reinforcement learning and sequential decision-making • Solid grounding in causal inference and counterfactual evaluation • Proficiency with PyTorch, TensorFlow, or JAX • Strong Python programming skills • Ability to implement research papers into working code • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills **Bonus Qualifications** • Publications at NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, KDD, WWW, RecSys, or AAAI • Experience with offline RL, off-policy evaluation, or recommender systems • Knowledge of large-scale ML workflows (Spark, SQL) • Familiarity with A/B testing and online experimentation **Benefits** • Medical, dental, and vision insurance • Mental health benefits • 2 days PTO + 3 days sick time • 401(k) plan • Subsidized commuter benefits • Lyft Pink membership **Work Arrangement** Hybrid (3 days/week in-office: Mon, Wed, Thu) | San Francisco **Compensation** $65–$68/hour (base pay range for San Francisco area) *Lyft is an equal opportunity employer committed to an inclusive workplace.*
