**Software Engineer - Backend** **About Cardless** Cardless builds infrastructure for companies to design, build, and launch their own financial products. We power branded credit cards for companies like Coinbase and Bilt, handling lending, compliance, and operations behind the scenes. **The Role** You'll work across systems running partner card programs: applications & underwriting, accounts & ledgers, transactions & payments, rewards, risk, and partner APIs. This role spans three types of work: • Building new products partners need to launch • Scaling and hardening existing systems • Laying groundwork for future products **What You'll Do** • Design and build backend systems handling real money and credit decisions • Take projects from ambiguity to production (scoping, design, implementation, testing, rollout) • Work across domains, moving to where the highest-value problem is • Partner with product, risk, compliance, operations, and external partners • Improve reliability, observability, and developer experience **What We're Looking For** • Strong systems thinking and problem-solving skills • Production backend experience with end-to-end project shipping • Solid fundamentals in distributed systems, APIs, databases, and infrastructure • Proficiency in a modern backend language (we use Java/Python, but yours transfers) • Clear communication and genuine care about correctness **Bonus Points** • Fintech, payments, lending, or card issuing experience • Workflow orchestration (Temporal, Step Functions) or event streaming • Built and maintained partner-facing APIs **Compensation & Benefits** $160,000 - $295,000 + equity + benefits • 100% health, vision & dental primary coverage • Meaningful startup equity • Catered lunches, $250/month commuter benefit • Parental leave, flexible PTO (min. 15 days/year) • Apple equipment, 401k plan **Location** San Francisco, CA (Jackson Square) — 5 days/week in-office
