Staff Product Engineer - Americas
Ashby · USA
About this role
## Staff Product Engineer — Americas Hi, I’m Abhik (Co-Founder & VP of Engineering at Ashby). We’re looking for a versatile, persistent product engineer who enjoys building reusable building blocks across the stack and advocating for the time and space to do it. At Ashby, engineers ship features end-to-end at a high pace—**no-nonsense, low-meeting culture**, with the ownership and agency of a seed startup and the scale of a growth-stage company. --- ## What you’ll do As a **Product Engineer**, you’ll take ownership over a large portion of one of our products and own projects **end-to-end** (wearing hats traditionally worn by product and design). You’ll: - Research competitors and customer needs - Write product specs - Create wireframes - Build and ship features across the stack ### Examples of what product engineers at Ashby have built - **Automated interview scheduling**: calculates possible times from interviewer availability + constraints, then presents options to candidates. - **Generalized declarative filter architecture**: consistent UI for complex filters, compiled to SQL in the backend. - **Signing offers in Ashby**: worked with customers to define requirements, chose technologies, prototyped, and integrated into broader workflows. --- ## What we’re building Ashby sets the standard for **Talent Acquisition (TA) software**—helping recruiting teams move faster with intelligent automation and insights. A key example: scheduling final rounds. Recruiting teams previously had to manually collect availability, identify qualified interviewers, do “Calendar Tetris,” schedule earliest possible dates, and handle last-minute changes—while balancing interviewer load and training/shadowing needs. We built Ashby to make TA teams faster, smarter, and more effective—and we’re expanding into adjacent HR areas as well. --- ## Why you should apply You may be a great fit if you: - Can tackle **any part of the stack** (frontend, backend, infrastructure) to deliver outcomes - Thrive in **product + technical ambiguity** and build powerful abstractions (not just CRUD) - Know how to balance **speed and quality** - Are ambitious and open to feedback - Communicate clearly and collaborate effectively - Seek **leverage** through automation and abstractions --- ## Why you might not This role may not be for you if you: - Prefer a model where tech leads/principals spend most time on project management or architecture reviews - Need heavy company-driven process/structure (e.g., sprint planning as a crutch) - Want to focus only on technical details and avoid end-to-end ownership - Only want “exciting work” and don’t want to engage with customer investigations - Expect everything to be planned upfront or assigned by others - Haven’t led/taken ownership of projects before - Want to mentor earlier-career engineers (mentorship is limited here; the team is largely Senior+) --- ## Engineering culture Ashby’s culture is built around the belief that a small, talented team—given the right environment—can build high-quality software fast (with regular hours). Key principles: - **Minimal process & lots of ownership**: engineers run projects; PMs/Designers set strategy and briefs; engineers research, spec, wireframe, and implement end-to-end. - **Natural collaboration & deliberate communication**: written proposals, prototyping, and clear updates across time zones. - **Tools and abstractions for leverage** - **Building a diverse team** --- ## Hiring pro
