About this role
## Senior Software Engineer, Backend — Data Streaming ### About the role Camunda is building an AI-first enterprise platform for agentic orchestration and end-to-end business process automation. As part of the new **Data Streaming** team, you’ll help create foundational architecture that changes how customers and internal products access process data. Today, customers don’t have a first-class way to stream their own process data out of Camunda, and Camunda’s analytics product is bottlenecked by querying the same storage the live engine depends on. You’ll join a **greenfield team** rebuilding how process data is consumed and served at scale—decoupled from the live execution engine via a **durable, continuously-written streaming layer**. You’ll work closely with Product Management, the Data Layer and Distributed Systems teams, QA, and Support/SRE, and have real ownership from day one. ### What you will do - Rebuild how Camunda’s analytics product consumes and serves process data at scale, removing it from the engine’s critical path. - Design and build core streaming infrastructure that decouples process data access from the live execution engine, backed by durable object storage. - Build customer-facing data streaming capabilities, including supported integration with systems like **Kafka**. - Make foundational architecture decisions for consistency and durability across a distributed streaming pipeline. - Participate in **L3 support** and on-call rotations to investigate production data-layer issues and feed learnings back into the product. ### What you will bring to the role **Must haves** - **7+ years** as a backend engineer (Java), with strong focus on **distributed** and/or **data-intensive** systems. - Hands-on experience building/operating an analytical serving layer over table formats such as **Apache Iceberg** or **Delta Lake**, including experience with an embedded/lightweight query engine (e.g., **DuckDB**) and/or stateful stream processing frameworks (e.g., **Flink**, **Kafka Streams**). - Track record working with **object storage** (S3/GCS/Azure or similar) and building reliable, **idempotent** upload/commit protocols. - Strong grounding in correctness and consistency for data-intensive systems (concurrent writes, atomicity, idempotency). - Proven ability to drive technical initiatives through ambiguity in a system still being designed. - Experience leading medium-to-large engineering initiatives end-to-end (3+ months): solution design, planning, cross-team coordination, and predictable delivery. - Strong communication/collaboration in a remote-first environment; translate requirements into technical work and give/receive clear feedback in code reviews. **Nice to have** - Experience with **Kafka** or similar event-log/streaming systems. - Experience with embedded state stores (e.g., **RocksDB**) for projection/checkpointing. - Experience with stream processing frameworks (e.g., **Apache Flink**), especially stateful processing with local state backends and checkpointing. - Familiarity with object-storage-native streaming architectures (e.g., WarpStream). ### Location / work model - **Fully remote** (global). Role code: **#LI-SK1 #LI-Remote #USEAST**. ### Compensation & benefits (high level) - Competitive, location-based salary ranges (examples): - **United States:** $143,800 — $231,900 - **United Kingdom:** £90,300 — £148,500 - **Singapore:** S$178,600 — S$267,900 - **Canada:** C$152,700 — C$251,200 - Equity
