**Staff Software Engineer — Query Engine (Rust)** **About Komodo Health** Komodo Health’s mission is to reduce the global burden of disease by enabling smarter use of data. Their Healthcare Map combines de-identified, real-world patient data with innovative algorithms and decades of clinical experience to power a suite of applications that help partners track patient behaviors, identify gaps in care, and address unmet patient needs. **The Opportunity** Data Foundations builds the data products behind the Healthcare Map. You’ll work on **Burrow**, Komodo’s **query and indexing engine written in Rust**, which powers Komodo applications today and will support **Marmot**, an AI platform returning patient populations in under **300 milliseconds**. As a **Staff-level IC**, you’ll set technical direction for how Burrow stores, indexes, and serves data, and for the APIs that applications and AI agents rely on. You’ll partner with Product, Platform, and **Labs@Komodo** to keep Healthcare Map data **fast, cost-efficient, and reliable** at enterprise scale. --- ## Outcomes & Responsibilities (First 12 Months) - **Engine Performance:** Ship measurable improvements to query latency, throughput, and cost per query (indexing, pruning, memory layout, storage access patterns). - **AI-Scale Serving:** Scale Burrow’s query interfaces for agent-driven traffic while keeping latency low. - **Migration Leadership:** Lead a major workstream migrating workloads from legacy systems to Burrow without disrupting customers. - **Collaborative Roadmap Delivery:** Partner across Data Product, Labs@Komodo, and Engineering to deliver production-grade solutions. - **Platform Hardening:** Improve reliability, observability, failure handling, and cost efficiency for a multi-tenant query fleet. - **Technical Multiplication:** Mentor and raise the bar for code quality, AI-augmented workflows, and system design. ## Essential Job Duties - **Query Engine Development:** Design, build, and optimize Burrow’s distributed query execution, indexing, and storage layers. - **AI & Agentic Serving:** Design query APIs, semantic layer, and serving patterns for AI products and agents. - **Scalable Data Systems:** Implement high-performance data processing/serving patterns across large datasets (Rust primary; SQL/Python/DuckDB/Spark as appropriate). - **Query Capability Expansion:** Extend Burrow beyond patient-centric data (e.g., provider-level trends, top-K analytics). - **Ingest & Consumer Partnership:** Partner with upstream data engineering and downstream product teams to deliver required APIs/queries. - **Cross-Functional Product Delivery:** Translate complex healthcare use cases into production-grade designs and execution plans. - **Technical Leadership:** Lead multi-quarter initiatives with clear trade-offs across performance, scalability, maintainability, cost, reliability, and time-to-market. - **Quality, Observability & Trust:** Define data quality checks, validation, lineage, monitoring, and alerting. - **Engineering Excellence & Mentorship:** Raise standards for system design, code quality, documentation, testing, CI/CD, and operational readiness. --- ## Competencies & Qualifications **Required** - **Systems Programming Depth:** High-performance systems code in **Rust** (strongly preferred) or Erlang/C++; own services end-to-end in production. - **Query Engine & OLAP Internals:** Deep understanding of analytical engines (columnar formats like Parquet/Arrow; indexing/pru
