## Principal Software Engineer, Asana Platform ### About the role The Platform organization at Asana builds the services and shared experiences that power every Asana product—starting with the **Work Graph** (where customers’ work lives) and the **APIs** that let people and AI agents act on it. It also includes the **events and reporting systems**, the **extensibility layer** connecting Asana to the tools and agents customers use, and new **shared experiences** used across Asana. As a **Principal Software Engineer**, you’ll be the senior technical leader for this organization. You’ll own the architecture that Asana’s products and customers build on, and drive initiatives too large or too risky for any single team to carry. You’ll partner with Asana’s most senior leaders to connect engineering plans to business outcomes and help shape where the platform goes next. ### Location & schedule - Based in **New York** with an **office-centric hybrid** schedule - Standard in-office days: **Monday, Tuesday, Thursday** - Option to work from home on **Wednesdays** - **Fridays** depend on work type and team partnerships (your recruiter will share details) ### What you’ll achieve - Set technical direction across Asana’s platform—from the Work Graph and its data model to the ecosystem of **APIs** and **shared experiences** - Partner across **R&D**, **Security**, and **Legal** to drive a portfolio of high-stakes, long-term initiatives - Set the bar for platform design: **interface design**, **separation of concerns**, and **reliability/functional guarantees** - Make high-stakes decisions on **build vs. buy**, **vendors**, and **replatforming/migrations** without stopping product delivery - Bring a grounded view of the industry and how **AI agents** change work platforms into R&D strategy with senior leadership - Serve as decision maker/backstop when technical questions cut across pillars, and turn cross-org disagreement into aligned plans - Grow technical leaders through mentoring and by creating scopes they can own outright - Represent Asana platform engineering externally through talks and writing ### About you - **12+ years** building production software, including experience setting technical direction across a large organization or multiple teams - Built platforms that other teams ship on at a scale where mistakes are expensive, with architectural decisions proven over years - Deep experience with **distributed systems** and **large shared data models**, including performance and reliability for enterprise customers - Clear view of how AI is taking platforms forward (agents as first-class actors) and the governance enterprises require when agents touch work - Led at least one major **replatforming or migration** where the system could not stop serving customers - Communicates effectively at every level (design reviews to executive strategy), translating between technical and business language - Grown staff and senior staff engineers into larger scopes; senior people seek you out to work with you - Experience with **multi-tenant enterprise SaaS** and **security/data governance for AI systems** (plus) - Strong collaboration and ability to foster an inclusive culture - Curiosity about AI tools and emerging technologies, with willingness to learn and apply them to improve productivity, collaboration, or decision-making ### What we’ll offer - Comprehensive compensation package with a focus on market value and fairness (includes a yearly pay equit
