We build durable, scalable systems with a strong emphasis on reliability, product quality, and a great customer experience. **Role Overview** We’re looking for a **Senior Software Development Manager** to lead the team responsible for **Backblaze Computer Backup**, spanning both the cross-platform desktop client and the backend services that receive, store, and restore customer data. The entire Computer Backup engineering team reports into this role, run through **Desktop and Backend Leads** who own the day-to-day. This is a **hands-on management role**: you’ll participate in architecture discussions, code reviews, and technical decisions across both desktop and backend, while also owning strategy, budget, and the growth of your staff. **What You’ll Be Doing** - Lead the full Computer Backup engineering team (with Desktop and Backend Leads running day-to-day) - Set the long-term technical direction for Computer Backup and ensure architecture/platform decisions scale with growth - Own the multi-quarter delivery strategy and partner with Product leadership on roadmap, scope, schedule, and priorities - Hold accountability for the team’s budget and spend (headcount, tooling, infrastructure) - Make technical and organizational decisions with broad, long-term impact (shared platform components and infrastructure) - Ensure desktop and backend areas work well together with shared goals and consistent agile delivery - Oversee agile execution across both areas (sprint planning, backlog refinement, standups, retrospectives) - Own delivery end-to-end (planning/design → implementation → post-launch support), partnering with QA and release - Ensure reliability, performance, and maintainability of the backup client and backend services - Champion engineering quality (grow unit testing and automated test coverage; make testing a first-class practice) - Take part hands-on in code reviews, architecture decisions, and technical problem-solving - Champion effective use of AI-assisted development tools and help establish norms around AI-augmented workflows - Improve team productivity by identifying bottlenecks, refining processes, and investing in tooling/practices - Negotiate with senior leadership and major customers; represent the team in executive reviews; communicate risks/trade-offs with clear recommendations **What We Are Looking For** - **7+ years** of engineering management experience, including managing managers/team leads (ideally in cloud/SaaS, desktop software, or platform engineering) - Experience setting long-term technical direction and system architecture for a growing product/platform - Experience owning multi-quarter technical and delivery strategy and shaping product roadmap - Experience negotiating scope, schedule, and priorities with Product and senior leadership - Accountability for team/department budget (resourcing and investment decisions) - Deep agile experience (scrum, sprint planning, backlog management, estimation, retrospectives) with a track record of consistent execution - Experience managing distributed, remote-first engineering teams (strong async communication) - Strong software engineerin
