At Pinterest, AI is a powerful partner that augments creativity and amplifies impact. **Role Overview** Pinterest Machine Learning interns help build personalized experiences using large-scale recommendation systems and hands-on access to data. As a Machine Learning Intern, you’ll tackle new challenges in ML and AI, conduct research applicable across engineering teams, and may engage in external collaborations and mentoring. **Research Areas (examples)** - Image recognition - User modeling - Recommender systems - Search, ads, and ranking - Natural language processing - Neural networks - Personalization - Graph representation learning - Big data analytics **Internship Details** - Duration: **12 weeks (paid)** - Start: **August/September** (fixed start dates) - Location (team-dependent): **Remote or hybrid** in **San Francisco, Palo Alto, New York, or Seattle** - Note: By applying, you may be considered for multiple ML intern roles. **Please apply only once within the USA or Canada**. **What You’ll Do** - Lead your own project from start to finish, contributing cutting-edge ML/AI research applied to Pinterest problems - Gain hands-on experience with production ML systems (algorithmic research, infrastructure, data engineering, training, inference, and product) - Leverage frontier AI tools and agents to accelerate implementation (prototyping and experimentation) - Validate AI-generated outputs via testing, code review, and critical thinking (accuracy, maintainability, security, alignment with standards) - Use AI to understand unfamiliar code, investigate bugs, and summarize technical context/documentation - Write clean, efficient, sustainable code - Take proactive ownership with minimal guidance **What We’re Looking For** - Working toward a **PhD** in Computer Science, ML, NLP, Statistics, Information Sciences, or related field - Proficiency in at least one systems language (**Java, C++, Python**) or one ML framework (**TensorFlow, PyTorch, MLflow**) - Experience with AI-native engineering (agent-friendly codebases) - High autonomy learning new agent-first development tools - Strong critical thinking validating AI suggestions (correctness, performance, security, maintainability) - Comfort iterating on prompts and refining workflows using AI-assisted approaches - Research experience and ability to solve analytical problems - Strong communication and teamwork; able to solve open-ended problems **Preferred Qualifications** - Publications in ML/AI/data science/data analytics/statistics (or related technical fields) - Interest in applying ML to impactful real-world problems on the Pinterest product **Why Intern at Pinterest?** - **Meaningful Work:** contribute to projects impacting millions - **Mentorship:** learn from experienced engineers and researchers - **Growth & Development:** professional development workshops and networking **In-Office Requirement Statement** - Collaboration style varies by work; you may need to be located near a Pinterest office for in-person collaboration (commutable distance). **Compensation (US based applicants only)** - Base salary range: shared for transparency - Salary for this position: **$12,100 monthly** **Commitment to Inclusion** Pinterest is an equal opportunity employer and makes employment decisions on the basis of merit. *#LI-HYBRID* *#LI-EB1*
