## Principal AI-Native Software Engineer ### About ButterflyMX ButterflyMX empowers people to open and manage doors & gates from a smartphone. Their products are used across **20,000+** multifamily, commercial, gated communities, and student-housing properties worldwide—helping developers, owners, property managers, and residents reduce operating costs and improve tenant satisfaction. ### The Role ButterflyMX is seeking an exceptional **Principal or Staff-level engineer** who has fundamentally changed how they build software because of AI. This is **not** a traditional software engineering role with an AI assistant bolted on. You will use **AI agents (especially Claude Code)** to independently take well-defined product initiatives from business requirements to **secure, tested, production-ready** software—while applying strong engineering judgment to ensure quality, security, and maintainability. ### What You’ll Do - **Partner with Product & Design** - Translate business requirements into technical requirements, system behaviors, and engineering tasks - Identify ambiguities, dependencies, risks, edge cases, and tradeoffs - Provide clear feedback on unnecessary complexity, technical risk, security concerns, and operational challenges - Communicate progress, tradeoffs, risks, and scope changes - **Build and Own Products End-to-End** - Own initiatives from technical design through implementation, deployment, and ongoing operation - Manage multiple products/major initiatives with limited day-to-day oversight - Make architectural, security, infrastructure, and operational tradeoffs within platform direction - Deliver working software quickly while maintaining high standards for reliability, maintainability, security, and UX - **Operate an AI-Native Development Environment** - Use **Claude Code** as a primary development environment and orchestration layer - Run multiple agents/sessions in parallel (worktrees, branches, workstreams) - Decompose work safely across agents and build feedback loops (review/test/critique) - Improve the tooling and workflows that make AI-assisted development reliable and scalable - **Automate the Product Development Lifecycle** - Help automate requirements → discovery → planning → implementation → testing → security → CI/CD → deployment → monitoring → documentation - Create quality gates so agent output is verified—not accepted blindly - Measure effectiveness, quality, cost, and speed of AI-native workflows - **Maintain Exceptional Engineering Quality** - Review agent-generated code as a Principal/Staff engineer - Reject unnecessary complexity, weak tests, insecure implementations, and “AI slop” - Ensure systems are observable, secure, maintainable, and production-ready - Debug across application, infrastructure, data systems, third-party services, and tooling - **Work Across the Stack and Beyond** - Deep hands-on expertise in **TypeScript/Node.js**, **MongoDB**, and cloud infrastructure across **AWS and GCP** - Use Claude Code to operate in adjacent/unfamiliar codebases (e.g., mobile, Go, etc.) - Improve legacy systems rather than insisting on rewrites ### Requirements - **Staff/Principal-level experience** (8+ years professional software development) - Proven ability to **independently deliver complex, production software** with Product & Design - **Expert-level experience with Claude Code (mandatory)** — must be able to demonstrate substantial product develop
