About this role

**Atomic Machines — Senior/Staff Software Engineer, Robotic Manufacturing Systems** ## Why This Role Matters Right Now Atomic Machines is bringing its **Matter Compiler™** technology platform online. The robotics fleet has reached maturity, and now manufacturing software must be brought up to par to leverage the fleet into a true fab. This role is about operating productively in ambiguity: writing design docs, driving architectural decisions, and establishing testing/review/traceability discipline—so the org can safely scale and let process developers (and eventually in-the-loop physical AI) program the fab. ## What You’ll Do - Design and build **distributed software systems** that coordinate **state, timing, and behavior** across manufacturing hardware. - Write, test, and debug **sensors, actuators, and process controllers** under **real-time** and **reliability** constraints. - Create workflows that bridge **manual and automated** process steps and coordinate handoffs between **production** and **process development**. - Evolve the existing system (including **API development** to govern machine behavior across the fleet) as the architecture converges—without waiting for a clean-slate rewrite. - Instrument systems so machine/process data is legible to humans **and** structured for **downstream AI/ML** consumption. - Investigate and resolve issues spanning **software, firmware, and physical systems**. - Establish and model software engineering practices (testing, code review, CI/CD, documentation) for a team that has outgrown its current processes. - Improve reliability via structured **observability**, fault handling, and graceful degradation. - Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and process engineers to translate physical constraints into resilient software behavior. - Partner with engineering leadership to converge competing architectural visions into one well-reasoned direction. ## What You’ll Need - **5+ years** building or debugging systems with real external dependencies (hardware, embedded devices, networked services, or similar). - Proven ability to make and defend **nontrivial architecture decisions** (build vs. buy, deployment topology, service boundaries). - Strong **Python** skills for production systems, plus proficiency in at least one systems or strongly-typed language (**C++**, **Rust**, or **Go**) *(confirm against actual stack)*. - Solid grounding in **distributed systems** fundamentals: state coordination, consistency, failure modes, concurrency. - Experience introducing or maintaining **CI/CD**, automated testing, or observability tooling in a codebase that didn’t already have it. - Comfort operating with an incomplete or contested spec, with a bias toward driving clarity. - Bachelor’s degree in CS, EE, Robotics, or related field, or equivalent experience. ## Bonus Points For - Experience with **real-time** or **resource-constrained** environments (IoT, edge compute, industrial systems, robotics, warehouses, manufacturing/fabrication/automation). - Thoughtful approach to **observability**: what to instrument, how to make failures legible, and how to make data usable by ML/AI pipelines. - Experience introducing testing/CI discipline to teams that didn’t have it—able to explain how you got buy-in. - Experience evaluating **cloud vs. on-prem/edge** tradeoffs for latency- or safety-sensitive systems. - Debugging issues requiring reasoning across multiple layers (application logic, transport, firmware, hardwa
