About this role
## Developer Success Engineer ### About Prefect Prefect builds automation for an unpredictable world—supporting mission-critical data pipelines and agentic workflows. Prefect’s ecosystem includes **Prefect (agent platform)**, **Dagster (data platform)**, and **FastMCP (open-source developer framework for the MCP ecosystem)**. Prefect is remote-first and emphasizes high standards, ownership, and thoughtful collaboration. ### Role Summary You’ll be part of the **Developer Success** team, providing technical support for customers across the **Prefect and Dagster** product lines. Your goal is to: - Resolve customer technical issues with the **least possible customer effort** - Prevent issues from recurring through **documentation, tooling, and product feedback** You’ll be trained on both Prefect and Dagster. The team is investing in agent-based automation for routine support, shifting your focus toward **complex diagnosis and escalation**. ### What You’ll Do - **Clear failure states and prevent repeats** - Diagnose issues across Prefect/Dagster installations, integrations, deployments, and cloud/container environments - Identify the underlying “why” so your first response resolves the problem and pre-empts follow-ups - Convert learnings into docs, debugging resources, and tooling - **Own what’s ours (and say no clearly)** - Take accountability for root causes within Prefect/Dagster’s domain - For out-of-scope problems, provide a principled “no” while still helping the customer move forward - **Support findings with evidence** - Back diagnoses with logic and evidence - Ask customers for what you need to troubleshoot both sides of an issue - Leave room for the possibility you missed something - **Provide the best update every time** - Avoid half-baked answers, but also avoid radio silence - When escalating, stay the customer’s single point of contact and maintain a regular update cadence - **Feed the product** - File reproducible product issues and surface recurring failure patterns - Work the queue independently and own moderate-complexity issues end-to-end - Build judgment around scope and escalation paths **Metrics:** Customer Effort Score and resolution time (balanced to avoid “fast but costly” answers). **Coverage / On-call:** 9am–5pm Pacific with an on-call rotation shared across the team. ### Your Qualifications **Must have:** - **Python fluency** (reading + debugging others’ code) - Hands-on experience running workloads in **at least one major cloud** and in **containers/Kubernetes** (enough to troubleshoot deployments you didn’t build) - Experience with a workflow orchestrator (**Prefect, Dagster, Airflow, or comparable**) and strong interest in data engineering - Track record of technical, customer-facing work (support, solutions engineering, developer relations, or similar) - Clear written communication to explain root cause to skeptical senior engineers **Nice to have:** - Direct experience with **Prefect** or **Dagster** - Open-source contributions - SQL and data warehouse familiarity - Experience building support tooling or automation ### What to Expect This is a **support-first** role with a queue, defined scope of support, and on-call rotation. Queue work comes first; consultative/code contributions may increase over time as agent tooling absorbs routine tasks. ### Compensation & Benefits (Base Salary Ranges) - **San Francisco Bay Area & NYC Metro:** $149,000–$176,000 - **Washington D.C., B
