**Information Security Engineer - Linux Administrator** **Company Overview** AMERICAN SYSTEMS is an employee-owned federal government contractor supporting national priority programs through strategic solutions across Information Technology, Test & Evaluation, Program Mission Support, Engineering & Analysis, and Training. **Role Overview** Seeking a **journeyman-level Linux Server Administrator** to support the installation, configuration, operation, security, and maintenance of **Linux-based systems** in a **mission-critical Department of Defense environment**. **Location / Work Schedule** - **Full-time, on-site** in **Middletown, Rhode Island** - **Occasional travel** to customer or program locations --- ## Responsibilities - Install, configure, administer, and maintain **Linux servers**, operating systems, and supporting infrastructure - Monitor **availability, performance, capacity, security, and resource utilization** - Diagnose and resolve issues across **hardware, OS, storage, applications, and network connectivity** - Perform **patching, software updates, configuration changes**, and routine maintenance - Secure and harden Linux systems per **organizational policies, DoD requirements, and applicable STIGs** - Manage **user accounts, groups, permissions, privileged access, authentication, and audit logs** - Configure and maintain services such as **SSH, DNS, NFS, web services, time synchronization, and centralized logging** - Support **vulnerability scanning, security assessments, compliance reviews, and remediation** - Implement and verify **backup, restoration, disaster recovery, and continuity-of-operations** procedures - Use **scripting and automation** to improve administrative efficiency and consistency - Assist with **incident response**, root-cause analysis, and corrective actions - Maintain system documentation (configuration records, procedures, diagrams, inventories, troubleshooting docs) - Coordinate with **cybersecurity, network, software, engineering, and customer support** teams - Participate in scheduled maintenance and provide **after-hours support** when required - Travel occasionally to customer/program sites --- ## Qualifications - **U.S. Citizenship** - **Active DoD SECRET security clearance** - **Bachelor’s degree** in IT, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Engineering, or related field **and ~3 years** relevant experience - Additional relevant experience/education/training may be considered in lieu of a degree - Journeyman-level experience administering Linux systems in **enterprise, engineering, laboratory, or mission-support** environments - Working knowledge of one or more Linux distributions, such as: - **Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Rocky Linux, AlmaLinux, CentOS, Ubuntu, SUSE** - Experience with: - Linux installation, configuration, patching, and troubleshooting - User/group/file system/permissions management - TCP/IP networking and common network services - Storage, logical volumes, file systems, and backup operations - Shell scripting (e.g., **Bash**) - System monitoring, logging, performance analysis - Security hardening and vulnerability remediation - Ability to analyze technical problems, identify root causes, and implement effective solutions - Ability to create and maintain clear technical documentation - Strong verbal and written communication skills - Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a controlled, on-site environment - **Familiarity with undersea platfo
