## Principal Software Engineer (Control Systems) **Location:** Barrow-in-Furness (Onsite) **Salary:** Circa £58,000 **Working model:** We offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements—please speak to your recruiter about options for this role. --- ## About the role You’ll work within the software engineering team at our Barrow site, delivering **safety-critical software** across the full lifecycle—from **design and implementation through to unit testing**. As a **Principal Engineer**, you’ll be responsible (to the Engineering Manager) for delivering packages of work, including **leadership and mentorship** of engineering staff. --- ## Core duties - Design **Safety Critical PLC and SCADA** application software for the **Dreadnought PMS System** - Develop safety-critical software for **PLC/SCADA-based control systems** - Test safety-critical software modules prior to handover to the system testing team - Configure software builds to support testing activities at all levels - Perform **configuration management** - Liaise with engineering teams and external clients --- ## Essential skills / experience - Degree qualified to **BEng** (or equivalent) - **Chartered Engineer** status (or working towards) - Experience developing software and equipment - Experience developing **PLC and SCADA applications** throughout the full lifecycle for **safety-critical systems** in highly regulated industries - Experience with one or more of the following: - Siemens **S7-1500** using **TIA Portal** - **WinCC OA** SCADA - Rockwell **ControlLogix** - GE **Mark ViES** PLC - Trinity (Honeywell) **iDefine** modelling - Experience of submarine/marine/nuclear/defence/pharmaceutical control system design and manufacture --- ## Team context You’ll join the **Platform Mechanical Integrated Delivery Team**, a collaborative group delivering critical mechanical capability for submarine platform development. The PMS system is a key element of the **Dreadnought Class Submarine**, providing central controls and indication for vital onboard systems (e.g., reactor plant and secondary propulsion). **Relocation support** may be available across all Submarines roles (subject to eligibility criteria). --- ## Security / export control note Many roles at BAE Systems are subject to **security and export control restrictions**. Applicants must, as a minimum, achieve the **Baseline Personnel Security Standard**.
