**Grafana Labs — Senior Backend Engineer (Databases / Analytics) | US | Remote** Grafana Labs builds **Grafana Cloud**, a fully managed observability platform trusted by **10,000+ organizations**. This role is **remote-first** and focused on an **AI-native data intelligence system**—helping AI agents retrieve the right enterprise context (data, metadata, definitions, lineage, quality signals, and institutional knowledge) in a governed, reliable way. --- ### The Opportunity You’ll help build the **database layer** for a general-purpose data platform with both **OLAP** and **OTLP** capabilities. The system supports classic analytics queries while also serving freshly stored data, embracing **separation of compute and storage** and designed to run across **multiple cloud providers**. This is an **early-stage, high-autonomy** role—comfortable working through ambiguity, making pragmatic architectural decisions, and evolving from internal dogfooding to **production-grade SaaS**. --- ### What You’ll Be Doing - **Own and build** one or more parts of the database: ingestion, query planning, distributed query execution, and storage/data formats. - Help define and build a **multi-tenant SaaS foundation** (tenant isolation, usage tracking, quotas, audit logs, background jobs, service boundaries). - Build **agent-facing retrieval workflows** via APIs and database interfaces for AI agents, MCP tools, CLIs, and internal apps. - Partner across product and infrastructure to balance **fast experimentation** with **long-term reliability**. - **Operate what you build** with metrics, logs, traces, alerts, and dashboards. - Contribute to **technical direction**: architecture, service boundaries, storage choices, API contracts, deployment patterns. - Communicate effectively and drive **ownership + impact**. --- ### What Makes You a Great Fit - Strong experience building **production-grade, user-facing systems**; self-starter with minimal supervision. - Practical **AI experience** (focused on real-world delivery). - Comfortable iterating: release prototypes, collect feedback, iterate pragmatically. - Proven initiative and ability to define scope in ambiguous situations. - Collaborative communication and solutions-oriented mindset. - Experience with **distributed systems**, catalogs, and table formats / query engines. - Proficiency in a language such as **Go, C++, or Rust**. - Track record of shipping software used in production. - Exposure to **cloud-native environments** (AWS/GCP/Azure). - Experience using **observability tools** to troubleshoot and improve reliability. **Bonus Points for:** - Distributed query engines - Data warehouses and/or data lakes - Data engineering tools --- ### Location / Eligibility This is a **remote opportunity** and they’re interested in applicants located in the **US or Canada**. --- ### Compensation & Rewards - **US base range:** **$154,445 – $185,334** (actual compensation varies by level, experience, and skills). - Includes **RSUs (Restricted Stock Units)**. - Compensation ranges are **country-specific**. --- ### How We Work Remote-first, with regular video check-ins and most work done **asynchronously in writing**.
