**Manager, Quality Engineering — Appian** **About the Team** Appian’s Quality Engineering team ensures our enterprise software platform is flawless, resilient, and optimized for global scale. You’ll work in a collaborative, fast-paced environment focused on deep technical precision, automated architecture, and continuous delivery pipelines—partnering closely with the Business Technology Development team to deliver robust validation frameworks for our AI-Powered Process Automation platform. **Location / Work Model** McLean, Virginia, USA | Onsite at Appian Headquarters --- **The Opportunity** We’re seeking a Quality Assurance Manager with deep, hands-on test automation expertise to lead our QA team and elevate our automated testing ecosystem. You’ll define the overall test strategy, build and scale modern automation frameworks, and manage a team of manual and automation engineers. You’ll bridge QA and software engineering to ensure rapid, reliable CI/CD. --- **What You’ll Do** - **Quality Leadership & Team Management:** Lead, mentor, and expand QA engineering; set performance goals; conduct code reviews for test suites; build a culture of quality. - **Automation Strategy & Architecture:** Design and maintain scalable automation frameworks (UI, API, unit, performance). Build custom testing applications from scratch using tools like **Selenium**, **Playwright**, and **Postman** (e.g., Java or Python). - **CI/CD Integration:** Integrate automated test suites into **GitLab CI** pipelines for smoke, regression, and release testing. - **Test Process Optimization:** Shift testing left by embedding QA early in the SDLC; define test plans during sprint planning; drive automated coverage targets (e.g., **>80%**). - **Metrics & Reporting:** Track quality metrics (defect density, execution time, automation coverage, MTTD/MTTR) and share actionable dashboards with leadership. - **Tooling & Infrastructure:** Select, evaluate, and manage QA and performance testing tools. - **Isolate Codebase Impact:** Assess structural impact of changes via meticulous code reviews. - **Govern Agile Feature Breakdowns:** Deconstruct platform features into detailed story tickets, identifying edge cases, dependencies, and deployment risks. --- **Required Qualifications** - **8+ years** in Quality Assurance, including **3+ years** in a QA management/lead/supervisory role. - **5+ years** hands-on experience building test automation frameworks from the ground up (e.g., **Playwright**, **Selenium**). - Strong proficiency in **at least two** automation languages (e.g., **Python**, **TypeScript/JavaScript**). - Proven experience integrating automated suites into **CI/CD** and containerized environments (**Docker**, **Kubernetes**). - Master-level understanding of **API testing**, **performance/load testing**, and security testing basics. - Extensive experience in **Agile/Scrum** environments (e.g., **Jira**). --- **Preferred Qualifications** - Familiarity with **AI-driven testing** tools or autonomous test generation frameworks. - Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field. - Experience using **AI tools** for test automation (plus). --- **Compensation & Benefits (Summary)** - **Base Salary Range:** **$125,000 – $250,000 USD** - Discretionary bonus may be available. - Benefits may include **401(k) with match**, flexible time off, paid parental leave, medical/dental/vision, life & disability insurance, wellness programs, flexible spe
