Reporting to the **CTO**, you will own engineering execution across: - **Backend platform** - **Infrastructure** - **AI product surface** This is a **hands-on leadership** role. You’ll stay close to the code, make credible technical decisions, and raise the bar on delivery quality. You’ll manage and develop a team of **Principal and Senior Engineers**. ### Responsibilities - Lead engineering execution across **backend, infrastructure, and AI-powered systems** - Manage and develop **Principal and Senior Engineers** (expectations, feedback, mentorship, career growth) - Translate product/business priorities into **engineering roadmaps, milestones, and delivery commitments** - Drive execution across **planning, sprint cycles, prioritization, and delivery forecasting** - Establish engineering practices for **code quality, documentation, accountability, and collaboration** - Identify and mitigate **technical/operational/delivery risks** early - Coordinate **production incident response** and improve reliability, uptime, and SLA performance - Hire and onboard talent; guide **leveling and org development** decisions - Communicate progress, risks, dependencies, and tradeoffs to Leadership and cross-functional stakeholders - Partner with **CTO, Product, Leadership, and Customer Success** to align execution with company/customer needs - Use **metrics, instrumentation, and feedback loops** to improve velocity, predictability, and operational performance ### Qualifications - **5+ years** of engineering management experience, including direct management of senior/principal engineers - Hands-on software engineering background with **deep backend expertise** and strong production-code reasoning - Proven track record delivering complex products reliably and at scale - Experience leading teams building and operating **cloud-native distributed systems** in production - Strong technical knowledge of **Python, microservices, REST APIs, and gRPC** - Familiarity with **GCP/AWS/Azure, Kubernetes, Terraform** - Experience with **PostgreSQL** and **NoSQL**; vector/graph DB exposure is a plus - Understanding of **LLM-powered product development** and AI evaluation/production pipelines - Demonstrated success hiring, leveling, mentoring, and developing engineers in a startup/high-growth environment - Ability to engage credibly in technical design discussions and challenge decisions constructively - Strong communication skills across technical and non-technical stakeholders - Judgment balancing **velocity, quality, reliability, and long-term sustain
