**Summary** Wikimedia Foundation is seeking a **Senior Software Engineer (Core Experiences)** contractor to join the **App Growth** team within **Core Experiences** for a **3-month, full-time contract**. This is a **web-first** role focused on **product experiences, APIs, and platform integrations** that can be reused across **mobile web and native app surfaces**—helping scale features across platforms and improve reader engagement and retention. You’ll build features that enable smooth handoffs between web and app (e.g., prompting readers to try a personalized reading list in the app, integrating interactive experiences via webviews, or handing off to web editing when users try to edit). **Remote / Time overlap requirement** This is a **fully remote** role. To ensure enough opportunities to communicate, you must have at least **4 hours** of your workday between **15:00 UTC and 21:00 UTC**. --- **You will be responsible for** - **Delivery & enablement:** Deliver medium-complexity initiatives from discovery through delivery; break work into features; drive estimation and manage scope; identify risks early; make pragmatic tradeoffs across quality, velocity, maintainability, and user impact. - **Frontend implementation:** Build accessible, adaptable, scalable, reusable components for **mobile Wikipedia product experiences** for a global, multilingual audience across web and app surfaces. - **Backend implementation:** Design and build **RESTful APIs** (schema/contract design through monitoring and iteration) to support scalable data pipelines for mobile and web clients. - **Quality, testing & observability:** Build software that’s easy to test, observe, and debug; instrument features to enable deeper analysis by Product Analysts. - **Cross-functional collaboration:** Partner with product managers, designers, analysts, and native app engineers to balance user needs, technical constraints, platform expectations, and delivery timelines. - **Prioritization:** Identify high-impact technical opportunities and risks; align the team on outcomes, capacity, and shared goals. - **Culture & standards:** Follow standards for code review, technical design, testing, documentation, accessibility, observability, and decision-making. - **Operational awareness:** Plan work with awareness of downstream/upstream effects. --- **Qualities we value** - **Clear communicator** (sync + async; adaptable to technical and non-technical audiences) - **Autonomy** (own work end-to-end; responsibility and follow-through) - **Feedback with empathy** - **Strong relationship building** and process improvement - **Comfort with ambiguity** and pragmatic tradeoffs - **Knowledge sharing** (documentation for handover; help others apply shared knowledge) - **Outcome-oriented** (deliver user value while balancing constraints) --- **Requirements** - **Bachelor’s + 5–10+ years** experience building production web applications/services - Strong experience with **JavaScript/TypeScript**, **Vue.js**, and backend languages such as **PHP** - Experience building **responsive/mobile-first** web experiences (performance, accessibility, usability) - Experience designing and integrating with **server-side APIs** - Ability to deliver in a **self-driven, lean environment** - Commitment to the Foundation’s mission and values --- **Nice to have** - Experience adding **webview-wrapped** experiences to iOS/Android apps - Experience launching/maintaining native or cross-platform mobile apps
