We focus on reliable, performant, and scalable solutions across the business—whether enabling new ways to pay, ensuring platforms can scale to demanding levels, or building seamless servicing experiences. **About the role** The Trust and Safety Foundations team within Checkout Engineering builds and operates foundational systems and data capabilities that support how Affirm understands consumer risk and meets its credit reporting obligations. This work sits at the intersection of data quality, system reliability, regulatory requirements, and risk. As a **Staff Software Engineer** on Trust and Safety Foundations, you’ll help shape technical strategy and lead complex, business-critical initiatives across systems and stakeholders. You’ll turn ambiguous problems into clear technical approaches, guide projects from strategy through execution, and strengthen the reliability and sustainability of the systems you own. You’ll also raise the bar for system design and engineering quality and help other engineers grow. **What you’ll do** - Set technical strategy for your team on a year-long time scale and align it with critical, business-impacting projects. - Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics to ensure technical sustainability, risks, and trade-offs are understood and managed. - Act as a force multiplier by defining and advocating for technical solutions and operational processes. - Own team operations and availability: monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, policies, testing, and alerting to support “keep the lights on” on-call. - Foster a culture of quality and ownership: set code review and design standards, and advocate beyond your team through writing and tech talks. - Develop talent through feedback, guidance, and leading by example. **What we look for** - 8+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale (e.g., **Python** or **Kotlin**). - Proven experience building highly available distributed systems using **AWS**, **MySQL**, **Spark**, and **Kubernetes**. - Ability to deliver major features/system components and/or deprecate functionality via clear technical and execution plans; write high-quality code that others can easily understand and use. - Comfort working in ambiguity and moving from low-level language details to the architecture of large systems. - Demonstrated growth and impact through gathering and iterating on feedback from engineering and cross-functional peers. - Strong verbal and written communication skills. - Requires either equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field. **Compensation & location** - **Base Pay Grade:** P - **Equity Grade:** 13 - **USA base pay range (CA, WA, NY, NJ, CT):** $230,000 – $290,000 / year - **USA base pay range (all other U.S. states):** $204,000 – $264,000 / year - **#LI-Remote** **Remote-first with flexibility built in** Affirm is remote-first. Most roles can be done from almost anywhere within the country of employment. Some positions may occasionally require in-person work at an Affirm office, and all new hires attend an in-person onboarding experience.
